Overheating and Leaking Oil Issue

questions for you guys...

1) My 83 is starting to overheat BAD, what can this be due to ? thermostat? waterpump? etc.....also, where is the thermostat located on these things?

2)I park at the same spot at work, school and at home, and everywhere i park, i leave huge oil marks. Do these 3a's have a common oil leak?

Assuming the problem isn't already the head gasket or head...you shouldn't let the overheating go...or you WILL need to redo the head.

Oil leaks tend to be from the valve cover gasket?

the thermostat is in the housing where the lower radiator hose goes into the engine....

If you're in the rust belt, check the oil pan for leaks. They seem to rot through every ten years or so in NY.

if you are possibly leaking oil and radiator fluid then I know that myself and a couple other members have developed a leak at the front driverside corner of the endgine at the head gasket.

the leak is hard to see because the alternators is right in front of it.

I think we all need a bit more info about the status of your fluids before fully diagnosing your issue.

I think my leak came after a decarboning either cleaning a carbon build up or blowing a hole in a weak gasket. Just an idea as to where to start looking

Under what conditions are you overheatimg? Check the easiest items first...coolant level, t-stat, radiator cap (it needs to hold pressure for the system to function correctly), back flush system, clean exterior of radiator fins, retarded ignition timing. Then look at the head gasket. See if any exhaust gasses are entering the coolant system.

As far as the oil leak....problems areas that I have encountered are distributor o-ring and fuel pump oil seal. Also look at oil pressure sending unit (behind the alternator), camshaft seal and front main seal (at the oil pump). Try cleaning the engine and then observe where oil starts appearing. Also check the oil filter. Maybe the seal has failed. If you are leaking large quantities of oil the first place I would look is the pressure sending unit.

i checked and yes, i do have a leak their too. so how to fix it is the question?

i over heat just driving to school, basicually, if the car is on for longer then 20 mins. All the fluids are fine, i check them religiously

So i took the old t-stat out and tried to put the new one in. heres my question, do i need any lube or glue to install the t-stat or should it just screw right on in the housing ?
