R&R the manual trans...???

Post by takza »

Got a quote for $35 for the gasket set that includes the trans to diff housing gasket. Notice that this gasket is very thin paper.

Has anyone found this gasket for sale by itself?

Has anyone tried using gasket maker and leaving the gasket out?

Getting ready to put my other trans in...but need to do a search on methods...did a writeup on taking one out...now I get to do the whole thing.

Notice that there are 2 different splines that have to be lined up to get the trans to mate...the clutch splines and the splines going into the front differential.

Somebody was talking about putting a trans in and having it not shift...someone else about not being able to get it to go the last inch or 1/2" or so....could this be the reason?

Need to put it in a gear and turn the front diff somehow to get it lined up? Make sure it shifts?

I think you will be fine without the gasket. (So will your transmission.) I have had excellent results on other transmissions by using a silicone gasket sealer. I have used a Subaru product (P/N 004403007) It's a little pricey but has never failed me.

The gasket acts as a spacer as well as sealing. It is strongly recommended not to use silicone sealer. I did the same thing with my tranny. Thats coming right from one of my techs at work.

I don't know if I buy the spacer effect of this gasket. It is literally about the thickness of a sheet of notebook paper. I am sure any amount of gasket sealer would be able to provide the same miniscule amount of space as the gasket would. I used a Mopar diff and tranny sealer (got it free from work) and had no reported problems so far.

Good luck!

The 2 surfaces are machined and a close fit...I'll use some good quality silicone gasket maker. The 2 sections are splined together...a few thousands isn't likely to be an issue.
