CV Halfshaft Replacement Question

Post by coltarms »

I just got BOTH reman cv shafts in from Napa. Before I tear into this job, I'd love to get a quick rundown of how to go about replacing them from someone who has done so. Tips, pointers? Things to check while I'm down there? I read the manual and it speaks of many special service tools. I am assuming that they are all not absolutely necessary. However, before I start this project, I want to make sure that I do have the necessary tools.

Is this going to be hard? Time consuming? I've already successfully rebuilt my carb and changed my timing belt....how does this job stack up in terms of difficulty?

Thanks!

i used to do this job the hard way
then i found out you do not want to remove the two bolts at the lower end of the struts.
not removing them means not having to do a front end alignment.
if you disconnect the outermost tie rod connection (17mm)
and disconnect the lower ball joint (i believe two 14mm)
remove large nut at outermost end of axel (this can be difficult)
an air or electric impact driver works most of the time
the whole assy should swing out now
you will have to use a large screw driver to pop the axel out of the transmission (because of snap ring on end of axel)
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Yeah, nevermind all. I found the thread I was looking for on this site. I was searching under "half shaft" and it is under "CV joint." That job was a lot lot lot easier than the manual makes it out to be. Drivers side shaft had 2 torn boots and was dead. Passenger side must have been replaced shortly before I bought the car, as the reman sticker on it was still shiny and clean. No more clicky click around the corners.
