i need advice
hi everyone, yesterday i was faced with a dilema, as you may know i started work on a 3asu head, the thing has a slightly bigger port than the normalone but has that annoying bulge around the intake valve, what should i do? do i remove it, and take advantage of the larger port or do i get some kind of performance just polishing the thing smooth (80 grit sand paper )

Hard to tell. That you can see, it the protrusion justified by some bolt or something it might house? Is it a water-jacket extension? If all it is is a casting bump, then it'd likely be fine to remove, but if it serves more purpose, it'd be foolish.

I haven't done it myself, but I've seen a lot of guys minimize the size of that bulge, but still keep it aerodynamic. You can take the size of it down a fair amount, and not compromise the strength of the valve guide. Take the most material off the sides though, and not as much off the front and back (ie. make it thin and aerodynamic). Do some research on the net (club4ag?) to look for pics of professional head work. The bulge around the intake valve is often what they spend a lot of time on. Good luck!

my plans were to sharpen the part that comes from the manifold and then to remove the part that rests behind the valve, since i havo to polish the whole thing it is going to be a handfull, so i dont know if i should remove it completly

as far as i have read, datsun and chevy heads have a swirl port design but it is made for low to mid rpm torque, if you want bottom end it is not your way to go, si ill grind the hole thing off, i meassured ( dont remember the numbers exactly) but the ports are 2 to 3 mm bigger near the valve
