crank pully question.

Post by T-Bone »

I was replacing my w-pump/alt belt the other day and I noticed that the inside ring on my crank pull spun free. I could move it around and spin it with my hand. I put the new belt on and I checked my timing with a timing light and the point was not lining up at all with the mark on the plastic t-belt cover. It still spins the w-pump and alt. Is it supposed to do that? Also, when my engine is cold at really low rpm it makes a bit of a metal clatter noise but once it warms up or the revs are up higher it goes away. could that be something to do with the crank pully?

It should not spin freely.
It is supposed to be one piece.

I wonder why it spins freely? the weird thing is that the part where the p/s pump belt goes on and the part where the a/c belt go on dont move. but the most inner one where the alt/w-pump belt go on can be spun. i take it that means that i need a new crank pully?

Ive never heard of a crank pulley comming apart before, but I guess it's possible! I'd replace it if I was you. You could do your timing belt at the same time, as it's not that much more work. You'll probably have to pull the radiator to get at the crank pulley easier.

Weird problem.

yeah i looked more into it. the metal clank noise that i could hear is the pulley moving toward the block and away from the block at low RPM. I might as well do the t-belt and water pump. how hard is it to remove the crank pulley?

oops, i miss worded that a little. its not the crank pulley moving towards and away from the block but its the inner ring moves. the two outer ones are solid.
