'87 Toyota Supra Turbo

Post by MootsMan »

There is one of these cars that could be bought here in the county where I live.....a buddy of mine and I have been eyeballing this car, sitting at a repair garage, for the past year and a half. It's black, 5spd. 3.0L engine, targa top. Apparently the owner doesn't want to spend the $300 that the mechanic was going to charge to fix the gas tank leak and some other minor problem. Now it seems, since the car has been sitting a while, that it needs a fuel pump and might have a few other issues as well.

I need some input from you guys that know Toyotas a lot better than I do about this particular car. What should we be looking for as far as things that can go wrong with it, esp. regarding the turbo ( they say it works fine now). What about price ?? Any info y'all can give me would be greatly appreciated.

If you are a good DIY mechanic, they can be ok. If you bring it into a shop for work, you'll probably go broke. The headgaskets are known to go on these engines. The heads were not torqued down enough from the factory. Sounds like the one you are looking at might have major rust issues if the tank is leaking? Have a good look at the underbody if you are considering buying. Rusty suspension, brakes, fuel system can be such a pain in the ass to work on. The cars are really heavy, but the engine can easily produce 300hp, and will really move the car. These cars can be quite fast with not much effort. As far as the turbo goes...I think they are fairly easy to get. I think it's a Toyota CT26. Check out some of the supra forums out there for more info...

Single or dual turbo? 7MGTE? If so, with proper internals, the block will take massive power. Not to mention last a long time.
I'd be concerned about deposits mostly, especially if they didn't Fog the engine pre-sitting.
