First of all I want to thank everyone who has posted about transmission problems. I removed the trans seperate from the transaxle and it really was a breeze. Thanks for the info!
Now to my problem. My '88 trans let go so I pulled one from a '87 that worked fine. Both came out without problem and went back in easily. Buttoned everything up, filled with oil and replaced shift lever only to find I cound not shift. I can however shift to 4wd and shift to EL. Start engine and everything spins well. No neutral and can not change gears? Like I said, the '87 trans worked fine and everything lined up and went together well. Any help?
Transmission Replacement
I'm going to do this job this summer.
Wondering if you were able to drive the car the trans was removed from? Could have been in this condition when you bought it?
Someone mentioned this kind of problem after they were in an accident...trans was locked up. Seems the force of the crash moved the trans/engine enough to make the shift lever hit the sheet metal of the trans tunnel.
You also might have the clutch binding in some way...test it by listening for a difference in sound with the engine running and with the clutch in or out. If the clutch isn't releasing...the sound won't change.
I'd try taking the shift lever out of it and making sure there is plenty of lube in the shifter ball joint...maybe mess around with it before you snug the bolts down again to be sure it isn't binding in some way?

Figured it out! I inspected the bad trans I pulled out of the '88 and it also would not change gears, but being out I could see where the problem was. The front gears were not engaging. Spun the gear a little and wham! Right into gear. So, Lifted the front wheels off the ground, kept manually spinning the transaxle while trying to shift after 10 to 15 minutes it went into gear and now works great. Should have made sure I could shift and that the trans was in neutral. This is not mentioned in any refrence book I used, should be though. We are goint to sell the '88 with a '87 parts car since we just ordered a 2006 Matrix XRS with a six speed! Toyotas Rule.
Having trouble understanding how that would happen...but if it works...AOK!
People putting these in have talked about having problems getting them to go together for the last inch or so...or maybe that was mating the engine/transaxle?
Probably a good idea to test the clutch & shifting as soon as the trans is up against the diff...before putting on most of the bolts?
