Closest model to Carib is a tricky one. The Carib has three trim levels: AV-I, AV-I RV-Special and AV-II.terceldude wrote: Thu Jan 02, 2025 2:46 pm The GEN SPEC model was the closest model you could get to the Carib in terms of model number and front end design at least until the 3rd period model was introduced. Although all models and even later Swiss models, JPN and USA and CND always used the small rear license plate holders w/o the rear fog lamp. AUTO DRIVE (Cruise Control) was only introduced to the American market in February 1985.
The least equipped Carib AV-I had small bumpers, small door trims and no inclinometer. In that way 1982-1984 Australian/New Zealand basic models are quite close. Biggest differences are Carib badges and front grille + front headlights at least.
Better equipped model is AV-I RV-Special. It has inclinometer, wide door trims, bigger safety bumpers and US style headlights. US SR5 models are kind of similar due to similar headlights and bumpers. Biggest differences are LHD vs. RHD steering wheel position, badges and inclinometer in later models.
And AV-II is similar to AV-I RV special with some extras. AV-II has in some cases US-style seats too. So 1982-1984 American/Canadian SR5 is pretty close due to similar mask, big safety bumpers, inclinometer and headlights. Biggest differences are LHD vs. RHD and badges, seat fabrics in some cases and inclinometer in later models.
Gen spec. is quite similar with Carib RV-special. Biggest differences are seats, inclinometer in some cases, badges and small bumpers. But it is quite hard to choose, which model is actually closest to Carib. Toyota made intentionally differences between market areas. Same thing is still noticed in todays Corollas. They are similar but different in details.
