Diagnostic Tachometer

Post by white86tercel »

I have a 2 door 1986 Tercel hatchback. I believe the car is a Canadian model, but it has no emission decals and the engine identification plate doesn't say which model engine it is and doesn't match any Candian or US plates I've seen in the wrecking yards.

I'm looking to get a tachometer and do a tuneup. I've heard rumours that standard 2 wire tachometers can fry my ignighter. Does anyone know if this is true.

Thanks

The wonderful FSM (and the AZ site-which all should check for our cars-it is most helpful and complete) emphasize that the ignition can be fried, as you mention.
Most, if not all, diagnostic tachs are supplied with an adapter for the service connector ("extra wire" from distributor with green connector and removable cap), as this same adapter wire is also used for many/all GM products from the middle '70s to middle '80s.
This adapter wire clips to the tach's green wire and thence to the service connector. It is probably available separately at most parts stores - just a wire with male and female flat clips (dunno the proper electrical term).
