(new user) Anybody go offroad?

Post by SakoTGrimes »

I just quickly browsed the forums, but I didn't find anything about 4-wheeling. I and a TON of other people offroad our 1980 Subarus, which beat the snot out of most "4x4 offroad" SUVs and I thought the 4WD Tercels might be similar. I tried to get one locally about 6 months ago, but it sold before I could find it again!

Well the cars are certainly capable of doing amazing things, there are some great pictures and videos in the "gallery" section. But at least for me, it is hard to get time off away from real life to go out and play. I will often go out and drive old dirt and gravel roads on weekends around my house, but haven't found anything real extreme to go on.

I am up for an outing but maybe this should go to the events forum. I am not REAL familliar with the places to go but I have friends that are. Also I have one freind with a lifted Ford Exploder that would like to go and he would make a good recovery vehical if someone got overly excited. There are several places I have heard about in my area. Browns camp and others.

My friend and I have a 4WD Tercel that is only used off-road. Which reminds me that I need to get some snow videos soon. :D

Peanuts get back on the Gallery.

For thoughs of os here in Portland, OR area. I like the Off-road outing idea. The Exploder is just an insurance policy. If it is not wanted then he can just ride with me, not an issue. Lets figure out a way of getting this done.

I take every opp to go off the beaten trak.
We just got a foot of snow so I am in my glory.
The area around is mostly new construction. This means lots of
mud. The snow tires I use all year round work decent as a mud tire too.
I put 185/70R13 snows on.
I am thinking of getting 175/80R13. It will be close when I am turning sharp though.

I have done a bit of fun stuff in my baby. They handle it pretty damn well. Hell, I took her off a jump, getting about 2 feet of air, 5 times then went straight to the highway and drove with her bouncing off the peg for about 10 minutes. No issues. Well, my battery started leaking acid and my battery tray broke apart, so my car won't start or run, but other than that its all good.
Bit of advice... Don't take dirt road corners at high speeds. Go read my accident post in the Repair section... Something about merrily rolling along.

I just had Hornbeam out in my friend's field. There's over a foot of snow with an ice crust on top. No problem for the tiny little 155/80-13 BFG Trailmakers. Not even icy hills or snowbanks stop it. :D

I've been around this car for years and I'm stil amazed everytime I drive it. 8)

Other than needing to crank a while when cold starting, the EFI works great in cold weather. :)

We had a great outing yesterday. After 2 days of steady rain the feild were quite thick with mud.

I went out in the 83 Terk and was accompanied by a 97 dakota v6 4x4 and a fullsize chevy 4x4 with a 6 inch lift and 33" BFG ATs.

We had a great time in a freinds feild for about 30 minutes and the tercel handled itself very very nicely. I never got around to getting any of my new parts on (the rav 4 suspension is hanging out in the garage waiting to be put on). As we were leaving, we had to forde this drainage ditch that was roughly 8 ft wide with about a 30 degree incline, and had just been graded and planted maybe 3 days prior. One of my poor little 13" wheels got stuck in the rut and could not free itself and kept causing the car to be pulled back in to the center of the ditch (roughly 10 to 13 inches of mud) and it could not pull itself out due to a lack of traction from my cheap-as-dirt tires. Ever not being a fan of the tow strap, I decided to simply push my way through the mud for about 200 ft to where the ditch took a slight rise in elevation and the ground was solid.
The trip was basically me driving forward untill the tires spun, and then throwing it in reverse and cranking the wheel back and forth to get the thing to back up, and then back to first and plowing as far forward as i could before the wheels dug in again, and causing me to repeat the process.

After all was said and done, I traveled roughly 40 to 50 meters through foot deep mud in a stock tercel 4wd. My freinds with the trucks were speechless. Sure it would have been nothing for them to do, but the little car left quite an impression that day, both on my freinds and in the ditch. The entire car was brown with roughly 1/2 inch of mud covering the entire top of the car. I am currently still kicking myself for not bringing the video camera or the digtal still camera.
We will go out again soon, so pictures will abound.
