Strange Noises....

Post by www.geloktech.com »

Well I was going home from a movie, and my car began to make these werid kind of noises in the back end it sounds like I have a piece of wood or something smacking against something it shouldnt. Its almost like theres some bushings or I dont know something has gone arye I cant figure it out for the life of me what it is. Its a constant motion of a squeaky tingy thudy sound this is isnt very helpful for those of you trying to help. Its like the shock towers are loose it weird none the less. Also there's a low metal vibration like a piece of sheet metal is vibrating somewhere in the engine bay. It only seems to do this when I leave from a stoped position about the 800-1200K 1st gear start. Goes away after that. Anyone got any ideas?

Loose shock? Or you can have snow/ice packed in the wheel well.

Rattle sounds like the heat shield on the exhaust.

Takza, thanks for the info. I still haven’t figured out what that noise is. I went over some speed bumps and its more noticeable there. When I approach the bump it almost sounds like it bottoms out over the bumps in the back weird noise. As for that pesky heat shield just ripped that crap right out of their stupid thing anyways. Well I got another question. What about carb that loads up? I’ve run bottles of chemical through the tank sea-foam treatment, barrymans chemtool and what not; vac lines seem to be fine. Perhaps a rebuild is in order. The longer I let it sit, say a few days the more the carb loads up. Say I go out start it up it hesitates really bad and then I hammer down on the throttle and blow out all the crap then it’s fine, I assume it’s the crap gas perhaps a switch to premium. Also when I blow out all the carb load the idol seems to oscillate until it gets up to temp then its a steady 900-1000K for idol. I'd go lower but it doesn’t like it meaning its really rough so I boost it up a little so its more smooth.

If you mean you are pumping black smoke out the exhaust when you start it up due to flooding....I wouldn't let it go too long.

I trashed a straight six engine this way...the raw gas washes the oil off the cylinders and in this case a ring broke...there was a screech...then I had more oil use after this.

Might use some top lube like MMOil till you get it fixed?

You could buy a float & needle....and a gasket for the top...and put in a new float..they can crack or gas log or the needle can fail. Or could be gas leaking down into the manifold some other way.

As far as the noise in the back...could have someone bounce the car while you looked/listened for where the noise is coming from....could be the muffler too.

i bought a carb rebuild kit for 33 bucks last weekend
mark the vac hoses
remove carb
take it apart and clean it
33 bucks ain't much
this carb had lots of debris in the float chamber
check out the little screen on the end of the needle seat
see if it has a hole in it
if its good remove it carefully and put it on the new needle seat
if it has a hole in it take one out of another carb or try to order from dealer
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Crap in Carb.

Ya, Takza that’s exactly what I’m talking about black stuff out the tail pipe. For a good 5-10 seconds. I took a look at the manual is the float located were the site glass is in front of the carb? I really don’t want to mess with it to much. I don’t know about you but as soon as I break into new endeavors its like opening a can of worms its gonna be one thing after another. I'm gonna check out that float tomorrow I hope that’s what the problem is although I don’t want to mess with the float and needle to bad, I know as soon as I rip into this thing its going to be a huge nightmare. Arrrghhhh. What to do What to do... I love this car, but its like unleashing demons within.

You can get a look at the sight glass on the front of the carb...have to remove the air cleaner first. Clean the glass with a swab.

My fuel level is at the lower limit...but I have the opposite problem...car sits a couple days...take a long time to get some gas too it...might have a pinhole in the pickup line from the tank?

You might just have choke unloading problems...where the choke won't open up after it starts...need to check the FSM on that....think there is a diagnostic.

I'm conservative or maybe lazy as far as repairs...hesitant to get too deep into things...if there is a way to avoid it....unless it's a safety issure or I could be stranded.
