My water pump is leaking out the bottom tell-tale hole. Its not too bad yet, but want to replace it fairly soon.
Both the FSM and Chiltons show/describe disassembling the entire lot when changing the water pump, i.e., the water outlet housing and bypass pipe, water inlet housing and thermostat, heater outlet pipe, etc., etc.
Looking at the water pump today, it looks like I might get away with removing and replacing just the water pump itself. Has anyone done this successfully, or am I asking for leaks if I attempt it this way? Was not able to find anything when searching the archives, thus the question.
Thanks for any and all input.

Replaced the water pump with a rebuilt, and once I actually had the old pump off, saw that I'd be a fool not to replace the o-ring where the back half of the pump bolts against the engine block. Also replaced the o-rings on the bypass pipe. Actually wasn't a lot more work to do so.
The job also ended up being a timing belt replacement as well. Found that the leaking coolant had gotten inside the dust cover and didn't like the look of the timing belt. Also replaced the spring that tensions the timing belt idler/tensioner as it was bent/stretched at the end that connects to the idler.
