Under hood main relay questions

Post by 2manytoys4menow »

Have any of you guy's noticed that when your terc are running and warmed up how hot your engine main relay and your fan relay gets ?? I have been taking care of some electrical issues (popping engine fuse) and I had a bad 60amp alt fuse and I change it and corrected a few other things and touched the main relay . OUCH , that thing was hot . same with the fan relay . I took out my fluke multi meter that has a temp probe and measured 110-115 degrees . WTH  . I started up my other terc wagon and also my MR2 and let them both get to temp and they were hot too . do they all run this hot ?? My 84 had a black plastic main relay and it was bad and I changed it out for 1 of the new metal ones like the fan relay . My 85 terc sr5 has this style of relay (metal) as does my 89 mr2 . I should note that these plastic covered relays can be taken apart to inspect them and mine had some serious heat discoloring going on and I think thats why my engine fuse kept popping every 2 miles down the road on the 84 terc . The alternator is new (bosch) and so is the regulator and the charging system is working properly and everything seems to be working ok now but the relay's run pretty warm . is it just because they are running current all the time ?? thank's for any input , Bruce .

Haven't checked mine for heat...but they do have coils and contacts in them that constantly carry a good amount of current...maybe they start to arc or something.
