high engine compression and timing
My 3 ac motor in my 84 terc had a rebuilt head put on it maybe a 1000 miles ago . I have notice since it has as gotten colder out side the engine likes to ping on the bottom end right off idle . I have it timed to spec and I have been running 87 octane fuel . I retarded the timing 3 degrees and added some octane boost and it helps alittle . I checked the valve lash last night and had a few tight valves and readjusted them and then I did a compression test . I have a basically new snap-on compression tester so I know it's accurate I was very suprised
to see the compression at 182psi to 185psi across all 4 cylinders . these motors only rate at 9:1 compression from the factory and I bet in reality it's more like 8.5:1 and new motor or broken in motor is around 160 to 170 . I think the machine shop that did the head must have taken alot off the head . My question would be , what is a good or I should say safe range for the timing . I should also note that this is has the emissions control box and the o2 sensor . when the car is cold and you give it alittle gas you can hear the ping or almost a rattle off the bottom end and even more so under load . when I tweeked the timing back to about 10 degrees with the vac advace hooked up it did improve some what . the other issue is I bought a 2 core radiator and I think it cools to good . I think most tercs came with a 1 core . when driving down the road the temp needle goes almost back to the cold mark and only comes up when the car sit's and idles a bit . I do have a new themostat and the fan will come on . I did not have any over heating issues this summer . should I put another 1 core radiator back in to keep the car up to temp . I'm also running Amsoil full syth 10-40 in the motor . I'm thinking that the motor is not getting and staying at an optimum temp and with the compression issue my motor is just going to ping at some point in the rpm range . the gas milage hasn't been the greatest either . I have a new carb installed to . It does run good and make good power ( for a 3a) . thank's for any input guy's , Bruce .

Sounds like they did deck it some? All I could say there is to try and time it on the road to where you have pinging in 4th or 5th from 1200 up to around 1500-1700 RPM at 2/3s throttle when warm...usually you won't be running below this RPM with this much throttle.
You could try using acetone in it to keep the carbon down (reduce pinging) and be able to use 87 octane.
My wagon with an OEM rad rarely has the fan run...same with an Escort I once had.
Probably your thermostat is kaput? Don't bother with the boiling test...put in a quality thermostat?
You could cover the rad some in the winter.

Give a boy a gun-give a biatch a cell phone-and pretty soon you almost got yourself a police state.
