Usable Parts from an Automatic?

Post by Abletobecain »

Hello all,

I'm going to be stripping an 1984 automatic 4WD this weekend. I'm going to basically be taking everything that I can get in an afternoon.

All of my cars are manuals so I'm curious what will translate...the engines are the same right? So I could take the whole head?

everything from the firewall forward should be the same, body parts, suspension, engine and components, etc.

Front strut tubes are shorter in FWD.
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!

Thanks all. I figured the engines were the same but I just wanted to double check before I started pulling stuff I can't use. It's supposed to be cold and rainy so I'm trying to maximize my time on it.

if the CV axles are in good shape, they are worth getting as well. if it is 4wd, I would also pull the rear brakes off, the backing plate and pull the left and right axles. if the bearings are good, they are also worth getting, usually it would be cheaper to buy the axle than buy a new rear axle bearing when you need it. It is also a fairly simple and fast swap out to replace a rear bearing if you have an axle with a good bearing already installed.

Replacing the rear bearing is not a DIY job, you need a big press to swap out the bearing and retaining collar on the axle shaft.

the driveshaft might be worth getting if the carrier bearing and the u-joints are good, but I think the front half is shorter for the auto trans (but not sure about that). If so you can only use the rear half and carrier bearing of the driveshaft from the 4wd.

the rear diff uses a different final drive ratio, so that is not useful to you.
