Decided to see how fast ~62hp could propel my AL25 (when I had a safe opportunity this weekend). Hit ~95mph (150km/h) pretty fast, but hitting ~100mph (160km/h) took lots longer. Wind resistance being a major factor on a 4wd vehicle. I was pretty impressed anyhow.

Haha!
That's impressive! It must have taken a long time to get up to 190km/h; even going down hill. I think your European tercel has higher compression than our North American tercels, and thus more power. This probably helps for high speed. As you say though, they are really not made to go that fast.

Sweet! It's easy to under estimate those big family cars. My AE86 went pretty quick when it was supercharged. I took a WRX Turbo and Porche 944 Turbo with it by a few car lengths in 0-60mph (plus many many other cars). Never had the opportunity to go for top speed, but it still pulled hard at 180km/h. I could easily have run it to the rev limiter in 5th which probably would have been around 230km/h. It was pretty sick. Too bad I blew up that engine and sold it off.
(Met my wife around that time and didn't have time to fix it). I've still got the car though, and have turbo 20V 4age plans for it for the future.

With the 85-88s wouldn't you be going close to the redline at 100-110 MPH? I would like to know how fast someone has taken a 83-84 Tercel 4WD. In the Car and Driver review it says top speed is 86 MPH and in the Auto Sport one it says 87 MPH. My dad floored his 83 going downhill on a freeway and could not go more than 80-82 MPH. The same went on a straightway and the RPMs were in the 3,200- 3,300s range, so I would be interested to know.

Carlos,I did 87Mph-3700-3800rpm(thats right,Takza) last week.I did it because I wanted to "wipe~out" my fear of hurting my motor at higher rpm's,not just because I wanted to go fast.Im still trying to determin how "solid" my motor is.I dont know how the Wagon would perform in a wind~tunnel, but Im guessing,Not very well.My ohnest opion about driveing an unmodified wagon as if it were a sports~car is that you be happy-er,Safer and evoid yet another Darwinian-Hurdle if you drove a sports car to begin with. <_<

You 83-84 guys are fortunate in a way with your higher final drive. Hitting top speed at below 4000 rpm is quite a difference. I can get well above 4000 in 5th in my 86. With your higher ratio, your 5th is a nice cruising gear and you would get more use out of 4th on the highway. I've hit 153 km/h going downhill, never seriously tried to go as fast as I can.
Well I've hit 5K on occasion, but not in 5th. And I've reached the astounding speed of 75 MPH at least once in 5th...maybe it was 80 or so.
I don't drive my wagon as a sports car...but it will handle like one on a well cambered curve...but watch things if it's one of those screwy corners where the road camber is reversed or the camber goes flat on you in the middle of the curve.
When I realize how well it handles...I tend to drive it that way...but it's costing me in tire tread.
Hey Thereminator...could you inform us if the valve seal replacement reduced your oil use?

Yeah AC,I realy apreciate the higher 5th gear-ratio because down here if you cant drive at least 65mph,your Doomed!I was haveing lunch with a friend who flys corperate-Jets(Falcon900)and is from Quebec. He let me drive his new Acura and I was shifting between 5000-6000 rpm! Its only a two Liter but puts~out just over 200 Hp. and its Valves(16) would advance automaticly. It was a six speed and you should have herd it when I hit 2nd instead of 4th....Dooooh!
Takza,Im doing another spot~check on the oil tomorrow,so all know-more-then.What I do know is that there is absolutly no-smoke,anymore,so hopefuly thats a leeding indicator.

Yeah, us (the 83-84) people are kind of fortunate to be able to go top speed under 4,000 RPM, but that seems disappointing in a way. You would think that when you're going max speed you should be hearing your engine roaring. The 87 MPH top speed is not enough for Sunday driving here in Southern California's highways and freeways. I've heard people saying that in the mountainous parts around here people are going 100 MPH and semis (big rigs) are going about the same. There is no way you could hit 100 MPH in a 83-84 car so driving there would be a no-no, well atleast you would have to get out of people's way.
About acceleration on freeways and highways- that's horrible when you don't have a clutch! My dad finally drove the 83 after not driving it for about 5 weeks Saturday. The clutch is definitely gone- no power. I mean it's SLOW and then when my dad built up some speed there were these cars that were merging into the lane and this Camaro is going slow and my dad thought he was going to speed up, but then it was too late. The guy didn't speed up and my dad had to slam the brakes and the guy was in the emergency lane. My dad had to pass him so he quickly downshifted to 2nd gear and nailed the poor little guy at 4,000 RPM and the same in 3rd gear at full throttle until it built speed again. The merging part was scary though, I mean you're coming and suddenly... you have to slam your brakes and the tires almost lose grip. When he downshifted to 2nd gear I heard the tires briefly spin until they grabbed on again. It's scarry when there is no acceleration, that's all I have to say.

I once got my '86 Tercel with the 3speed automatic to 105mph. I even had that speed checked, courtesy of the CHP. The officer was kinda laughing when he told me how fast he measured me going.
He only wrote me up for 80mph, and the speeding ticket was $60! Probably cheaper than having a mechanic calibrate the speedo.

It looks like you were lucky. My dad- as long as I remember and according to what he says he's never gotten a speeding ticket. He actually drove the 83 pretty slow, which is what the car was designed to do- go slow and I'm ok with it, but sometimes you need the max speed to be high.

Hello!
If I've taken 190 M/h in a big hill it's because a think that european tercel have au shorter gearbox.
To have this speed, you must accelerat a max in 4th in the hill, and put in 5th. I was at 4800TR/M a 180 (my counter stop a 180). My wife was with my IS200, and she tell my that have mange to go to 190 ( at the lexus counter). What a noisy car at this speed!
bey! ( and thanks to accep french tercel owner )
