Re: Fixing Up Jenny
Well, Jenny is insured and driving. Now that I've had it on the highway for a bit, I've noticed a puzzling issue. When under hard acceleration (bootin' it) there is a sort of throbbing vibration from the front drivetrain. If you've heard a glacially fed river in the spring melt, the rocks rolling in the river is what my drivetrain faintly sounds like. Usually only noticeable when accelerating between 30-80 km/hr. I have jacked up the front end and wiggled each wheel, and there isn't a unusual amount of free play. The wheels move smoothly. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm planning on changing it soon. It would be sweet if that was my only problem!

Re: Fixing Up Jenny
The way you described it sounds like it is. Mine did the same. Got a few leaks I need to tend to. I'm losing about a quart a month. Normally when I fill it back up, the noise suppresses.LowBuckCanuck wrote: ↑Mon Jun 11, 2018 8:51 amI'm planning on changing it soon. It would be sweet if that was my only problem!

Re: Fixing Up Jenny
A throbbing on acceleration is usually cv joint related. Figuring out which side can be tough if it isn't obvious.

Re: Fixing Up Jenny
Well, is changed the tranny sauce, it was long overdue. I am now certain that it is the left front wheel bearing. Are the front wheel drive wheel bearings the same as the 4wd wagons? I remember this was a pain when sourcing rear wheel bearings.
Re: Fixing Up Jenny
FWD and 4WD front wheel brngs are the same. Keep in mind you'll need inner and outer seals and a press to change 'em.
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!

Re: Fixing Up Jenny
I replaced the bearing and seals using a steel plate, a large socket, a bottle jack, and a JD350-B track loader. The hammering vibrations are gone, but it still makes a bit of a gravelly rumble on acceleration. It might be the right front wheel bearing going, but I'll just drive it for now. Nothing seems to be wrong besides the peculiar noise.

Re: Fixing Up Jenny
I'd check before you keep on driving it. When my wheel bearing blew out last month, the inner race was cracked and was allowing the hub to rotate whIle the race was not, taking a bunch of metal off the hub. Took me near 2 weeks to come by one. I thought hubs would be plentiful but I was wrong.

Re: Fixing Up Jenny
a noise like that may not even be bearing related, but Baily is correct. You might just jack each of the front wheels up and rotate the wheels by hand, if they turn smoothly they are not likely at risk. Than you can drive it until either it goes away, or it gets so obvious it is easy to track down. That is my usual approach if I can not find a minor annoying noise. Make sure everything is safe, than just keep driving it.

Re: Fixing Up Jenny
One way to judge wheel bearings is to hold on to the coil spring while rotating the tire. The spring amplifies any roughness in the bearing. I always use a stethoscope on the not completely obvious ones. What you hear from the drivers seat doesn't always end up where you thought it was. Had one that I thought for sure was the LF during the test drive, but it was RR.
