In my personal book. The new Cummins and Powerstroke are not yet ready to be called truly wonderful machines. The Powerstroke is a bit closer, out of virtue of being out 2 years before the 600 was released. Owing to that fact, I'll rank diesel superiority by the elder models.
1. Cummins 24v Tubro Inline 6 - Good, trusty, reliable. Built to last. The con rods on this demon weigh twice that of the new Powerstroke 6.0.
2. Powerstroke 16 valve turbo V-8 - Rugged, reliable, powerhouse. This demon has con rods similar to the 24v, but still only about 2/3 the size. It won't go as long as the Cummins, but in its life, it'll work just as hard.
3. Duramax ?? valve turbo V-8 - A beast of a newcomer in the market. The manufacturer did a good thing in doing more factory testing than "Human Testing". It is the smallest componant-wise, uses Aluminum heads (very odd in the diesel world, not to mention risky), and I don't know much about its longevity, but don't underestimate it.. I've seen this engine throw 750 horses @ 3500 ft/lb of torque down before!
All of the Big Three diesels have the ability to be modded into beasts that will pull down a skyscraper, and in fact when all three are peaked in performance, the show is a close match, with the Cummins in the forefront, out of virtue of being a "Medium Duty" engine versus the V-8's "Light-Duty" (if towing 25,000 lbs is light-duty)
If Ford put a Cummin's in their lower F-Series (it can be ordered for the F550, 650, and 750) then we'd have that. You look at Cummins' 100 year or so experience level versus International's 60 or so, and you get a big gap in experience. Cummin's just knows better what they are doing (and to be honest, Cummins manufactures engines THEIR way.. Ford forced International to compromise slightly over the incredible 444 engine model you see in medium delivery trucks)
Has anyone seen Dodge's new MEGA-Cab system? Its like a Ford Crew-Cab with an old-style 5 inch extension beyond the year seat-backs. I get a feeling that that will be taking a bit from Ford's sales and they will quickly be one-upping Dodge.
For my own reasons, I prefer the TRUCK of the Ford more than the TRUCK of the Dodge. Sure, Dodge has Engines and tranny's built to last versus Fords PIECE OF SHIT E40D and 4R100 tranny's, but I personally be;ieve Ford makes a better truck than Dodge. My opinion, everyone is entitled to theirs.
WHY CAN'T FORD OFFER A JAKE-BRAKE FROM THE FACTORY????

Oh the duramax has reliability problems...
Yes the heads are cracking.
We have used that engine before, in a small isuzu truck, and it is crap.
Gm need to design velcro engine mounts, because they will have to replace a lot of these engines
Guess it does better in a pickup.
But they are nice to drive...
