Timing belt broke
I was going about 60mpg when suddenly stopped running.. Knew right away it was timing belt. Luckily i had one in the car.. Got pushed to garage and it's fixed.. Did i harm the valves?.. #1 cyl no fire.. It was cold tho and i have no choke.. Had to get groceries into fridge and run out of day now.. Just need sum reassurance my toy aint broke.. Will pull plug in the morning
Re: Timing belt broke
You should be fine- 3AC's are non-interference engines. Just one more thing I love about our cars... Don't know what could be the problem with #1.
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!

Interference engines with timing belts freak me out.

Re: Timing belt broke
Despite it being a noninterference engine, I have seen timing belts break that do other damage. One of my project tercel4wd had the timing belt break while the previous owner was driving it, the belt wrapped around the idler pulley and ripped it out, damage the oil pump housing, spraying motor oil everywhere.
Though this is a rather rare event, it is still worth replacing the timing belt on a regular interval to avoid having it break while you are driving it.

Re: Timing belt broke
Noted.. I only have 150 k miles on it.. If i knew it was so easy to remove i wud have done it way sooner.. Plug was fouled.. Poor fuel in mexico.. Running great again.. Im thinking the new weak link is the fuel pump in the tank?

Re: Timing belt broke
Mechanical fuel pump, mounted behind carb, not in tank.

Re: Timing belt broke
the mechanical fuel pump is very reliable, few ever need to be replaced. If it does, they are easy to swap out. If that is a oncern of yours you might find a good used one and carry it in your kit of tools, only takes about 15 min to change it out if the need arises when you are in a remote area. even new they do not cost much.
