Re: Input shaft gear/idler gear failure
Gotcha. Like I said this one (trans) came with the car and was already out. There was no bearing on the rear of the input shaft

Re: Input shaft gear/idler gear failure
This was the old transmission. The input shaft was already out, so I don’t know the condition of the pilot bearing that was on it—assuming there was one

ISO manual trans for 85 4wd
Just bought a beauty of an 85 wagon, and only a few weeks after purchase the transmission made some bad noises—and a lot of metal came out of the drain plug when I opened it. Looking to find a replacement trans or at least parts to repair the one I’ve got. Input shaft gear and idler gear are toast ...

Input shaft gear/idler gear failure
Anyone have insight on a failure like this? Input shaft gear & idler gear. This is an old transmission that came with an 85 4wd I recently bought. I think the same thing is happening with the replacement transmission as well

Re: Damaged input shaft bearing?
Not quite sure how much came out. Have yet to measure. Also, good note on the diff swap. Hoping I won’t have to, but good to know. Fortunately the previous owner has the original trans. The one I got was a replacement. Not sure of the reason for replacing, but I’m gonna pick that up in the next week ...

Re: Damaged input shaft bearing?
Gotcha. I suppose I’ll cross that bridge when I arrive to it. For now, I drained the gear oil (which was low) and it was pretty much a gob of silver sludge at first, and a piece of a gear tooth came out with it. I’m feeling pretty hosed now.

Re: Damaged input shaft bearing?
Hi Chris,
Thanks for responding. I’m encouraged to hear that input shaft troubles are not necessarily a major cause for concern. Also, good insight on efficiency when pulling trans and diff together. Less work in the long term—I reckon—to do a little more more work now.

Re: Damaged input shaft bearing?
Hey thanks for the confirmation. Seems like pulling the transmission is the easiest way to replace. I’ll be checking and filling (if needed) the transmission oil today or tomorrow to see if that might make a difference…? I recall reading one post where that did get rid of the noise

Damaged input shaft bearing?
Hello everybody!
I’m a new owner of an 85 SR5 4wd wagon, manual transmission. I’ve only had it for about one month, haven’t driven it more than ~400 miles. In the last 50 or so miles of driving it’s developed a ticking noise that’s in sync with the engine rpm’s. It was very faint at first, and I ...

Rear driveline
Hello! New to the site, and 1st time owner of a Tercel. I have an 85 4wd wagon 6spd manual transmission. I was wondering if the rear driveline spins when in 2wd? I had the rear end jacked up and noticed when I spun the wheels by hand, the rear driveline spun as well (transmission was in 2wd ...
