Re: vibration when car stops
My BEA had also a rough idle, which resulted into higher vibrations. At least one reason was a leaky TVSV. Afterwards I needed to adjust my timing and it became already a lot smoother. Therefore many minor things can affect your idle. You can spray start spray to intake manifold components if you su...

Re: Sputters or dies after running a while.
You will notice very small movement of RPM gauge if your ignition system works as planned. Therefore that is a very good gauge to monitor state of your ignition system. It if works well, then you will take a closer look of fuel system.

Re: 1986 Tercel 4wd
I did spend lately some days inspecting this Tercel further. This car turned out to be positive surprise considering the fact that it has been outdoors since 2007 at least. The body is pretty much rust free and very well rust protected excluding wheel arches. Therefore, I declare that this car is de...

Re: 1987 Tercel 4wd project
It is time to do June update for my red 1987 ones. BHP is still on display, so I have been working mostly with BEA. I have been putting finishing touches to the look of BEA due to closing antique vehicle inspection. The basic requirements are that vehicle should have mostly original OEM parts. Safet...

Re: 1984 Toyota Tercel, SR5 4wd (3A engine)
We have emission testing too. It can be challenging occasionally. I had too high HC's during emission test. So far I have found both leaky TVSV, wrong adjusted valves and wrong set timing due to TVSV leak. Emission testing can be good to incicate health and settings of your engine. It is simultaneou...

Re: Life expectancy of OHC timing belts?
I try to inspect them visually sometimes. I have had my first 3A engine since 2005 in very irregular usage. It has its timing belt probably from 1990's and I have never replaced it. But I have replaced my timing belt in my two best condition cars due to higher running hours during last 4 years. Ther...

Re: Tercel history question regarding carburetors
European Toyotas had carburetors until 1989 at least. 2E engine and 4A-F had carburetors until 1989 meanwhile updated ones had fuel injection (2E-E & 4A-FE).
Some market areas had carburetors maybe even during 1990's.

Re: Stainless exhaust installed!
Good enough quality is the ultimate challenge of spare part manufacturing. No one will buy part again if the quality is too high. Luckily exhaust is one of easiest parts to remake in case of failure. But yes, I would still like to last them longer of course too. My newest brown one has a broken exha...

Re: 1987 Tercel 4wd project
It is time to do first post of the 1987 Tercel season. I have been quite busy this year due to various things. Luckily, I still had some time to put to these wagons too. Our local car club made an exhibition of Japanese cars. My restored BHP was chosen to that exhibition. It will be on display at le...

Re: Stainless exhaust installed!
Nice exhaust! I would recommend spraying cold galvanizing compound spray to that if you live in salty areas. I bought recently a muffler to another car. They recommended me to do it because they say that rust starts to spread from welding points. This forum maybe a bit quieter than before but theref...

Re: Sputters or dies after running a while.
This can be related to anything. Do you have an RPM gauge in your car? Does it move when it is hot and not starting?
Second question is, are the spark plugs wet when it is hot and not starting?

Re: It starts but doesn't idle or stay running
That original connector / disconnect might be hard to find. You might try replacing it with an insulated spade disconnect like the yellow one pictured for heavier gauge wire.414d8TcMI7L.jpg Disconnect the battery when installing. You'll need a crimping / stripper tool. If you don't have one, buy a ...

Re: Electrical problem
If the wire snapped only, you just need to replace that connector and wire with another connector. It does not need to be even similar if you don't want to have OEM look.

Re: Carburetor mounting gaskets
Actually I don't know this. Has the heated carburetor electrical heating or has the heated carbuteror water inlets & outlets?
My swapped 4a carbuteror has water inlets and outlets but my 3a does not have anything as far as I know.
