Re: The Definitive List of Ways to Lift a Tercel 4wd
Some pics of the spacers installed on cross member, trans mount and driveshaft carrier bearing mount. 2021 tercel cross member spacer.jpg trans spacers.JPG carrier spacer.JPG Sorry for the upside down pics! I just replaced the front axles and wheel bearings. The bearings were not really bad but when...

Re: Gambler SR5 - Introduction & mystery part
If you give it the lift, consider dropping the cross member, transmission mount and drive shaft carrier bearing mount. It's not too hard to do this. You will have to make spacers and get longer bolts for the cross member and mounts. It will save you from having to replace CV axles, and they will las...

Re: Manual Steering?
For what it's worth, mine is a 1987 with tilt steering. I did need to do something with the rubber mount on the passenger side of the manual rack. Can't remember if there was a larger rubber sleeve that went in there or I managed to double it up to get a good fit. I think the tie rods are same for p...

Re: Manual Steering?
I just converted mine from power to manual steering. I had the transmission out so that made access easier. I had to modify the steering column where it attaches to the steering rack. No mods needed to the steering column at firewall or inside the car. Xirdneh has made a video on this steering colum...

Re: upper rad hose pipe fitting on head.
Thanks NWMO. Yeah, my brother just suggested JB weld and I think I will try that first. I used a paper gasket and also some gasket sealant. I'm pretty sure this issue originated because of the O ring on the bypass pipe. It seems to be a common leak point. Last time I was replacing this pipe fitting/...

upper rad hose pipe fitting on head.
I was just re-installing the upper radiator hose pipe fitting where it goes onto the top of the engine and I snapped a piece off the head. The bolt was going in a bit tight and so I backed it out to make sure no threads crossed. Seemed ok, just tight so I went for it and before it was fully in there...

Removing tie rod ends
I just came up with a new way to pop off the outer tie rod end without damaging it. In the past I've tried just pounding hard on the part of the steering knuckle where the tie rod is and it sometimes pops out (castle nut removed first, and maybe left on there loose so that you don't accidentally hit...

Re: The Definitive List of Ways to Lift a Tercel 4wd
AugustusFerdinand - Not quite... as far as I can tell. You raise up the car by adding the spacer on top of the strut. The engine and trans dropped a half inch with the spacers for the cross member, rear trans mount and the driveshaft carrier bearing mount, but the car itself does not move. The engin...

Re: The Definitive List of Ways to Lift a Tercel 4wd
As several members have mentioned, to ease the CV angle, you can drop the front cross member, trans mount and driveshaft carrier bearing mount. I just did this on my tercel that has 1" spacers at the top of the front strut tower mounts and the rear pathfinder springs/firebird shocks. I used 1/2...

I'm happy with the radiator so far, no problems and still shiny!
It's listed on Rockauto under 87 tercel, cooling system, radiator

Re: Little 1984 Tercel, deep snow achilles heel
Thanks for this. I will have another look at my heater controls and the air flaps in the ducting. I'm not getting much air up to the windshield on defrost setting. I've already lubed the cables and when my temp control lever broke, I fabricated a much stronger one. The valve under the hood is workin...

Re: engine overhaul vs. swap
I have the 4a with weber. I just did a bunch of other stuff to the rebuild the car (trans, suspension, 1" strut spacer lift and 1/2" drop to crossmember and trans mounts, new exhauast system -no cat and cherry bomb for a "muffler" and some body work etc) including ditching power ...

Re: Little 1984 Tercel, deep snow achilles heel
Yes, that is the rad I had used. Got it from a pick & pull years ago. Worked well but probably not needed for up here in Canada. It served me well when I took the tercel down to Burning Man in 2011 towing a tent trailer. I've now got this new shiny aluminum radiator from RockAuto and it has the ...

Re: Little 1984 Tercel, deep snow achilles heel
Thanks for that. I also recently got a temperature scanner, so I'll try that out and see what readings I get from some different spots on the engine & rad hoses etc. I also have to replace the fan switch in the radiator. I previously had frenkensteined a Camry radiator in there and modified the ...
