Re: Looking for a 85-88 4WD Transmission

Looking for a transmission for my 85.
Are there directions on this board for testing a transmission at a wrecking yard?

sign of trans health is to pull the input shaft and see how sharp the teeth are, and how worn down the bearing journal is. if the teeth are thin and sharp, or the journal is ...

Re: ISO 3a intake manifold and carb

thats an interesting import -- 2 door tercel with the spicy motor. i would love to do the swap, but it would be a monumental undertaking -- every single vacuum line and component would have to be swapped over between the two motors. and then, not having any info would make it hard to fix the down ...

check the tercel4wd fb group. however, being in NY, i doubt there are many good ones left between the salt and inspections.

Re: Brighten up your Headlights !!! Big time.

I'm not clear on what this wiring harness is for. Do you use it with the stock 83-86 bulbs to increase the voltage they get?

In my '87, I put in these LED bulbs a few years ago and have been really happy with them. They're one of the best bang for the buck mods I have come across.

Re: Won't go into gear after changing transmission oil

tercel,

I’m not suggesting an overhaul or anything. I would expect you could get things back in order much more easily with the transmission out of the car.

Chris

either way, it has to come out, and get completely torn down. my guess is one of two things -- 1. the reverse idler came out of ...

Re: Won't go into gear after changing transmission oil

Keegan wins this round, lol.

Tercle, it sounds like you will need to remove the plug you filled the trans from and shine a light in and use a screwdriver to get the fork in there back into the right spot before putting the plug back in. That should fix it.

I always fill from the plug directly ...

Re: beginner welding advice?

I am not a good welder, my skills are rusty since I rarely do it, and I find a skilled friend to do it for me if it is important. but I have seen the inexpensive wire feed portable welder from Harbor Freight being used, and for light welding seemed to work very well. Easy to use, and cheap. A ...

Re: 4A-FE as a rebuild block

The easiest way to tell is that the early 3a's have both the rod and i think main bearing tangs on the opposite side vs the later 3a's. here in the states the early 3a's are 80-82.

I just checked my main bearings. I have a bare block waiting for con rods + pistons from machine shop ...

Re: 4A-FE as a rebuild block

I have already all parts for both engines so I will have hopefully two rebuilt engines before May 2025, we will see. I want to do 4A-FE to 4AC conversion because 3A and 4A engines are getting quite hard to find. But we have still some decent mileage 4A-FE engines left. Unfortunately all European ...

Re: 4A-FE as a rebuild block

reuse the 3ac rods, keep the 4afe crank or use the 3ac crank, somehow find a set of 4ac pistons and send it. i dont think anyone here has the budget to balance one of these engines unless youre going to push high power and high rpms. the info is neat and useful to have, but for anyone wanting to ...

Re: 4A-FE as a rebuild block

i mean, if you want to, sure! but theres nothing to convert aside from swapping pistons. if you have a 4a block with the oil pan indent, all you have to do is drill and tap like 3 holes so our pan fits.

Re: No spark on 83 tercel

Man all this great help! I did try both alternators and neither seemed to change anything. The reason I ask about ecm and emissions control is that my understanding is that one or the other has the ability to slightly advance or retard timing based on inputs from vacuum switches and oxygen sensor ...

Re: Starter works intermittently

ive seen this happen before with other jdm vehicles -- somewhere down the line is a bad connecion; on its own it may show 12v, but as soon as you put a load on the signal line it cant carry enough current to engage the solenoid. the usual fix is adding a relay on the signal line to engage the ...

Re: Input shaft gear/idler gear failure

Anyone have insight on a failure like this? Input shaft gear & idler gear. This is an old transmission that came with an 85 4wd I recently bought. I think the same thing is happening with the replacement transmission as well

was there a bearing on the end of the input shaft when you removed it?
