Re: FWD broken, 4WD = RWD only
Archinstl--Thanks for the reply. I have put the front of the car up on ramps and go out every now and then and pump a little more in the front fill plug, just behind the axle. Almost up to 3 quarts now, back drain plug is backed out the seven turns and I have been running the wood stove in there all ...

Re: FWD broken, 4WD = RWD only
I ordered EMPIs and have installed new seals and some other parts that were due (shock mounts, brake lines). I have a quick question regarding the diff/trans combo-- I drained the front diff using the obvious drain plug, to get any shards of metal out and to see if I could get the broken axle end ...

Re: FWD broken, 4WD = RWD only
Here are some photos for Petros, hopefully they aren't too large:

Piece out. :P

The splines look fine inside the diff, so a little work to clean out any remaining metal bits from drilling and it should be ready to put back together. Rockauto shows EMPI axles available now, so I ...

Re: FWD broken, 4WD = RWD only
I think in future I will shift out of 4 after reaching pavement, up until now I thought I was doing myself ( or maybe the tranny) a favor by having it in 2 on dry pavement. I would never have guessed the axle would twist apart like that, but I think that this is a failure due to fatigue developed ...

Re: FWD broken, 4WD = RWD only
Thanks for the replies Petros, I was headed that direction (getting axles out in prep for future shenanigans) and discovered the splined portion of the axle snapped off inside the differential. I'll have to figure out posting pictures, its just twisted right off at the base of the splines.

Re: FWD broken, 4WD = RWD only
I've got the car up on blocks in the shed and unfortunately the axles are fine. I guess the remaining options are front diff and output shaft. Can't say I'm very happy, really had fingers crossed for a faulty axle.

FWD broken, 4WD = RWD only
Today running some errands a curious thing happened. 2wd quit working in the Tercel, but the car is still mobile in 4wd-- power only going to the rear wheels.
Here's how it happened. Currently mixed conditions on the roads, with packed snow turned ice on less used roads, and bare wet pavement on ...

Re: Dumb Timing belt mistake = Oil Pump trouble
Petros guessed it.
I pulled the pump off last weekend and found that the problem was one I made for myself. No gasket had come with the pump so I cut out a paper one, but in trying to finish before the sun went down, I neglected to cut a hole for the oil passage into the block. I have now replaced ...

Re: Dumb Timing belt mistake = Oil Pump trouble
Larry:
The pump gear of the oil pump surrounds the crankshaft and is driven by two flats machined on the crank. I don't think the pump can be installed flush against the block unless the pump gear is properly engaged with the crank. Then the front oil seal goes on followed by the crank timing gear ...

I would love to give this a rest, the thought of taking it all back apart again was quite depressing, but I have one week off between my seasonal jobs and need to get this put back in order. I did get a little time clearing the "cabinet shop" out of the my 12x16 garage, and then pulling ...

Re: Dumb Timing belt mistake= Oil Pump trouble
Update: Spent most of the day trying to prime the pump. Pushed oil into the oil pressure tap and turned the engine backwards by hand. Got oil coming out of the oil filter fitting, replaced the filter and kept pumping oil into the oil pressure sensor hole and turning the engine. Added 3/4 of a quart ...

Re: Dumb Timing belt mistake= Oil Pump trouble
I had not considered priming the pump-- it always works fine after an oil change. I suppose the pick up tube doesn't drain during a change? Ok-- will try priming first-- thanks.

Re: Dumb Timing belt mistake= Oil Pump trouble
Thanks Tom,
I downloaded the FSM about five years ago at the Library (!) and it has been very useful, unfortunately it appears the average Toyota mechanic is smart enough to avoid this problem altogether. The pump looks pretty simple, either I'm not pulling any oil up into the pump due to the seal ...

Dumb Timing belt mistake = Oil Pump trouble
Are you ready for this? It is a very long and painful story that does contain a question if you can make it to the end.
Not long ago I bought my second Tercel 4wd, because I liked my first one so much (more on that later). This new one has about 170K miles and there are some indications that prior ...
