Re: Long term t4wd owners: Q's about elect. component durability
I had trouble with the headlight relay. If I drove for a long distance at night, I would risk it burning up. Meaning it would blow and there would be a burn mark between the plugs. No headlights. Stuck. So I started to kept a spare in the glove box for these breakdowns. Finally, I have a brand that ...

Re: 4wd selector shaft oil seal replacement?
The transmission I just put in my car had this very leak. The seal around the metal "rod" that comes out of the transmission to shift 4WD. Everything comes apart easily, but the oil seal does not want to budge. I am afraid to make it leak more, or ruin it and not find another one. So, I just used ...

Re: rear end locks up when shifting into 4x4
The toyota dealer told me those dates from 8/82-8/84 for the 3.73 ratio. So, that is interesting to know that an October 84 has 3.73 ratio. I am glad I just changed my transmission. Then the only way to know for sure is to count the gears. I was told the difference is the number of pinion gear teeth ...

Re: RPM Cycling Situation & Vacuum Switch Location Query
I had a surging problem. But, at the present moment I have disconnected the top hose from the EGR to the metal pipe, a short little hose. I do not surge, I think that stopped it. My surge was related to the air conditioning system also , it would stop when the AC was on/off, can't remember which now ...

Re: Early vs. later transmission longevity?
Yes. 4wdChico, greetings.
Well, I had to turn my transmission in as a core, so, I could not tear it apart, as much as I wanted to. But, it sounds like you are correct about the problem. It worked perfectly until the noise started. But, all is perfect again, and it was fun putting the new ...

Re: Water Pump Bearing Failure?
Antifreeze drips are not necessarily below the source. Antifreeze runs along and drips at the lowest point of it's rivulet. The thermostat hose and radiator hoses are also in that area.

Re: 4wd selector shaft oil seal replacement?
I have successfully fixed some leaks with Seal All.
It doesn't always work though. It depends how dry you can keep your
working area.

Re: Early vs. later transmission longevity?
I have a 1983 Tercel 4WD wagon.
My first transmission started popping out of gear at about 180k.
I replaced it with a low mile japanese transmission.
I am now replacing that after at 200k more miles.
Problem with this one:
Either the trans oil was not filled properly at a lube place.
Or, it may ...

Re: 83 Transmission Removal/Installation
My clutch, that I had a mechanic replace for $800, has only 30k on it. I wish, now, that I had done it myself. But, remember, I do not have my clutch exposed. I am doing something different. I removed my intermediary plate and transmission only. The half shafts, front differential, and bell housing ...

Re: rear end locks up when shifting into 4x4
I have been immersed in this ratio issue for 2 months.
The 3.7 ratio is from 8/82 - 8/84. So, if you are in a junkyard check
the metal tag inside the drivers side door (on the body, not the door).
It will have the month and year of production. After 8/84 they are 4.1.
This is important, because I ...

Re: 83 Transmission Removal/Installation
The transmission came out fairly smoothly. It does angle down once that back support bracket is off. I supported the transmission with a regular jack with a piece of wood on it and then slowly lowered it while watching my engine from the top to make sure the distributor and fuel pump did not wedge ...

Re: 83 Transmission Removal/Installation
I am ready to remove the transmission only. I need my axle ratio, and I am not confident taking out the half shafts. I just hope I can get the transmission back in and working, as it is costing me 700 for the transmission. High price, but the only one available. There are none available with my ...

83 Transmission Removal/Installation
I have an 83 tercel 4WD wagon.

I had trouble finding the right ratio 3.7 transaxle, so I decided, per manual, to just remove the transmission, as the transmissions are all interchangeable, and keep my transaxle. The manual, however, shows the insertion of the ...

Re: How do I tell the correct tranny replacement?
When using the method of jacking up the car to determine the gear ratio. The back is a free differential, meaning that the tires do not turn together. Therefore, you must turn the back tire 2 revolutions while counting the drive axle revolutions. If the back tired were to turn together it would be ...
