Seats from other Toyotas?

Post by chriszx2 »

I have a 84 2wd Tercel. I know this forum is for 4wd, but I cant find good info on the 2nd gen Tercels ANYWHERE. My qustion, are there other seats that bolt into the 2nd gen without too much work? I found that mkii supra seats fit the 1st gens with spacers, dont know if the same would be true with the 2nd gens

Welcome to the list!

You came to the right place. I have found that most seat swaps usually take some mods, usually not much but there will be some messing around.

I got Toyota MR2 seats (from an 1987 MR2) to fit with some spacers, longer bolts and a bit of drilling. They look great and I find them much more comfortable.

the last project terc i had came with seats from an early 90's sr5 toyota pickup. had adjustable lumbar support and the wings of the seat back can be adjusted to hug your ribs. you can see pics of them in this thread, and also the mods that were necessary to make them fit.

https://tercel4wd.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=7835

the previous owner had just kind of shoved them in with a few spacers and longer bolts for the front mounts but i found that to make them fit better, i had to file the mounts and trim some plastic trim. if i were you, i would probably just get the seats from a 4wd sr5 tercel. i love the hideous plaid patterns and the feel of the seats. the 87-88 DLX (base) model 4wd wagons had really nice cloth seats too.

i'm assuming 4wd seats will fit a 2wd, anyway. i'm not sure if anyone else here has tried swapping between the two.

Here's another tip: if you just want to upgrade the seatback because it has lumbar adjustment, grippier wings, etc., try looking for Toyota seats which have the same mounting setup for the seatback. Often a manufacturer will use the same hardware design in several platforms because it works. You can keep your old seatbase and upgrade the foam, and use a nice seat cover for the whole thing.

Should be purchasing these AW11 MR2 seats in about a month! Going to road trip to pick them up, along with MR2 brake upgrade parts hopefully.
I think these would fit right at home in the Tercel. I was attempting Tesla Model S seats mounted in my Tercel, but they are just too much damn work to get powered. And too tall to enjoy without cutting up the Tercel floorboards.

Looking forward to a more plug-and-play seat swap. The Tesla driver's seat I've installed right now is fun. But it's not the right ergonomic fit for the Tercel. I'm going to be sad to see it go still. Definitely the nicest seats that I've seen in any Tercel, I think they are made by Recaro.

I tried to put some original plaid seats from an 85 4wd into an 86 auto and they didn't totally fit, just a heads up if you're thinking about it! The front seats and upper part of the back fit ok but the lower portion of the back seat was too high and had a slightly different way of mounting (at least on the one I had, which I'm not sure but may have been modified somehow).

I assume the '86 auto was FWD? If so, the rear seats are definitely different.
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!

I wanted to show off my custom seat solution for my '85 Tercel 4WD!
Found these killer Mk1a AW11 MR2 seats from a gentleman in California.
To fit in the tercel, I cut the stock seat brackets off at the rivets, took some measurements and transplanted those stock brackets onto these sporty MR2 seats.
