They diagnosed the issues to= Non-functional advance (dead in the dist, I hooked it all up right) sporratically failing coil, sticking choke, 1 dirty jet, and a partridge in a pear tree. They didn't charge for the choke fix, or cleaning the jet (they just blasted it with a burst of air and it pulled some gunk out), and they are including seeing if the 2nd dist works in the diagnosis charge of $40.28. They said they'd install the dist for $37 if I was feeling lazy.
They say the worst case scenario is that I'll need a new distributor.
These guys are very friendly in their approach. They didn't pressure me at all for them doing any of the service. They just said if I wanted they'd do it, but that they had no problem if I did it myself.
Saw a hyper-souped Acura NSX there (drool) and a pretty rusty 88 Corolla FX-16 (AE86??) that the owner was asking about replacement body panels and I think I heard him mention that his supercharger was sqeaking...
BWA-HAHA
Well, the backup dist has a working mechanical but a fried vacuum advance. They say it runs worlds better. I'll be the judge of that. I owe them a total of $80.56. Not bad. They did say the carb was ready to be tossed or rebuilt. So that'll be a new dist and carb at some point. Not like I didn't want either.
I'll let you all know.

MSD sells a box. Sales rep said the 6200 box, but the site says the 6300 box. It'll hook up to our dist. Performance spark plug wires would be needed. Vitek Performance has that covered.
Its pricey, but worth it if you want better performance.

Typrus, no offense dude, but... an MSD igntion (or a Mallory, or a Crane, or a Vertex, or a Haltech) won't make ANY more power. Period.
There is nothing wrong with the factory ignition, and in fact, the joules that our integrated solid state electronic coil in cap on distributor system put out is grossly sufficient.
An MSD box won't make one more horsepower than a correctly functioning factory Toyota ignition, in/on our cars.
We don't have a problem with not enough SPARK... or mistimed/miplaced spark... we have a "problem" with not enough air/fuel mixture not being compressed enough, with not enough cycles (low horsepower by design, for the sake of efficiency and low initial cost to sell).

I think the FWD FX16 is an AE92. Sounds like it might have the 4AGZE from the Supercharged MR2. biggrin.gif
--------------------------------------------------
Is that in Phoenix, Arizona? Because, I built a blown FX16-GTS there, about 8 years ago... it was black, with red piping... we dropped a 4A-GZE in it, with the engine management from a 1988 Mister Two...

Colorado.
More powerful spark, and a step closer to being able to put in a EFI conversion might be my reasoning. Plus, I like having the extra bragging rights. Multiple sparks? Maybe. I don't think ours does that?
By adding performance, I'm aiming for those who want to push more fuel, maybe more air thru. And if that doesn't satisfy you, its sheerly the fact that it is a cool. SHINY thing. SHINY. It's enough for me. lol.

Hm... There is a film on my windshield. I don't smell antifreeze with the heater on. How can I tell if my core is shot, or if this is just a screwy... thing.
I can't clean this film off with Windex, with Elite Auto Glass/ foaming cleaner, nor with rubbing alcohol. What is it?????

I'd assume any film from antifreeze would come off with just plain water. I've heard of films forming from gases released from plastic/vinyl interiors, maybe that's it? Try carb or brake cleaner.Typrus wrote: Hm... There is a film on my windshield. I don't smell antifreeze with the heater on. How can I tell if my core is shot, or if this is just a screwy... thing.
