Tight Half Shaft

Post by jeff.built »

Thought I was home free with everything but now can not pop the drivers side half shaft out of the transaxle. Using a flat "wonder bar" with a combination of all my force or tapping on end with hammer. Gets a good bite on the half shaft, just no movement or release. Going to try a more rigid bar to see if that makes a difference but if I'm missing a "trick" that someone knows, please clue me in.

SUCCESS! Part of posting is to take a break and give a little more thought to the problem. I found that the rigid bar worked by ramming it against the transaxle housing. Constant pressure didn't work, nor did a hammer on the end of the bar. Once I tried to slam the bar against the transaxle, it popped on the second attempt. Guess I didn't have enough leverage the other way with only a 2' or so bar.

A word of caution to those who might "slam" the bar against the trans housing - place a piece of wood against the housing to absorb the blow. It is unlikely that the housing would crack, but it did happen to someone here some years ago.
The force needed certainly varies; I used a 2' Wonder Bar on 3 axles with no probs, but had to use a crowbar on the 4th (with wood against the housing).

Certainly good advice and I did consider it when I was working on it. I did not use a block of wood but did attempt to pry/slam off of the more substantial looking section of the housing. When I get to the passenger side axle I'll be better prepared and have the car jacked higher than what the scissors jack provides.

One thing that surprised me in installing the new axle was how far out of the transaxle it was when I had to resort to driving it in place. Slipped into the splines easily but was a good 2-3" away when simple pressure would not work to insert further. Have not reassembled everything yet for a test drive so hope it is correct.

I know I don't have to emphasize the obvious (don't take offense), but check this link and the photo. I thought my PS axle was in all the way for 9 months, but...
Apparently one axle was a wee bit oversized. It took quite a while to reduce the diameter with emery cloth and it still took 'a bit o' bangin' to seat it. But - it's been tight ever since with no leaks for over two years now.
