Clicking/ticking in drivetrain

Post by Tercel4WDwannabe »

I've got an 87 2wd tercel. I was driving it the otherday and out of nowhere something in the drivetrain began clicking. I can feel the clicking in the shifter and it sounds like it's coming from the passanger side. The noise starts at 5mphs and is apparent in every gear. Doesn't seem to get louder when i turn. Clicking can be heard in neutral and with the clutch in any position. I know the tie rods need to be replaced, did they just fail? The clicking gets more rapid the faster the car moves. Inspected the cv boots and they arent ruptured. Any ideas before I have my mechanic take a peek? Just want to make sure it's safe to drive.

sounds like the input shaft gear had lost some teeth, and that lost them all. Usually the first gear to go when run low on oil, it is the furthest from the oil supply in the sump. IF you had the 2wd version, the same trans as the more common hatch back and 4 door should be the same. Unless you just want to be done with the car. The 2wd version is not too difficult to change out the trans, at a self servcie wrecking yard you can get a transaxle for $50- $60.

Good luck.
