FWD transmission change?

Post by asdfasdf »

Hi all

First sorry about my bad english.

I have a 2WD 5peed rust bucket. 150 xxx km with the 2A engine(started after 3 years, some compressed air in the fuel lines). My question is: Do I need to get the engine out or lifted to get the transmission out? Second do I need to replaced the oil from the old transmission because its from the junk yard.

I have the 4WD too with 5xx xxx km, but tree did fall over it and the valves/body are rotten.

Thanks

Dude from finland.

edit: ouh... the repair guide has got FWD too.

The trans can be replaced from under the car without pulling the engine. Clearance is sometimes a problem, but it usually is less work than pulling the engine and trans together. Some people who have an engine hoist find pulling the engine and trans together from the top easier than just removing the trans.

I have done it both ways, but I found removing the trans from under the car is easier than pulling both the engine and trans from the top (unless you have to remove the engine anyway). Just make sure you get the car high enough on jack stands so you have enough room to work, and pull the trans out from under the car, once you get it lowered to the floor.

Good luck

Thanks

I did get it like 5 centimeters = 1.96850394 inch from the engine but the clutch lever is getting in the way. It won't tilt at all so it need more clearance?

This is not my picture. (this is not FWD transmission?)

Here's some info:

You have essentially the same trans/engine? Depends on whether you just pull the trans or the transaxle with the diff?

5 door hatchback, 2A engine, and FWD Like this one.

It only one piece. Not like this. So you cannot get the diff "off" there is no bolts for it. (I will take pictures when I get to my farm.)

That lever can be a problem to get it to clear. Try loosening the front mounts and lower the rear of the engine to give you more clearance (watch the distributor does not get damaged on the firewall, remove it if it will make contact). You should be able to wiggle it out by shaking it back and fourth. It has always worked for me, but I was helping another list member last winter and we had a heck of a time to get the trans out from under the car. I do not know why it was such a problem for the clutch lever to clear, I have done is several times on my cars (an '83 and an '84) without issue. Do the later ones mount the engine a bit further back?

Also make sure the side mounts are removed all the way, they can limit movement (these are the two metal plates on each side of the diff housing to the side of the block).

Good luck.

Well I did it.

Some bruteforce.. and turning the transmission like 20 degrees anticlockwise(watching from the front) it did fall off.

It was jammed because the input shaft did not rotate at all.

Well the next thing is to get the new transmission mounted.
