LOGO

Post by jamorg2 »

I will be repainting my 1983 SR5 (the lovely gold and brown color combination) and am needing the TOYOTA sticker for the tailgate. Anyone have a lead on where to get one?
THANKS!

Unless you must have an OE (which, if available, might be pretty fragile after 20 years), I would suggest choosing a pleasing font and printing something on the 'puter, and transfer it to Contac paper and cut and stick it to the car.
I did this, was happy with the result, and will soon (if the weather holds) cut a stencil and spray it on my car - also a Goldie.
I did not go with "Toyota:" my choice was "TARDIS," in Bauhaus 93 font,(kinda Art Deco), which seemed appropriate for our cars (at least to me).

PS: I'm pretty sure there was a thread on the OE sticker a year or so ago; did you do a Search?

this logo site I use quite a lot at work as it has high res vector files that you or a signwriter can resize without pixelisation.

This link has the "TOYOTA" text with the 90's onwards logo attached you could download this onto disk, get a signwriter with a laser cutter to make a large vinyl sticker of just the text in white to the correct proportions that you need (measure the old one first obviously).

This would be a clean and cost effective option, the vinyl text will come out really well if you clean the area first I wouldn't bother about the black outline

good luck!

Sorry - I should have more explicit.
I did not exactly "transfer" the letters to Contac paper, but printed the letters on paper, then cut out the letters and placed them on the Contac paper and then cut the letters from the Contac paper.

Mattel's method would be a lot more "permanent" and certainly easier to install, but I opted for the low-tech approach (read: I'm a cheapskate).

I did this with the TRD logo's on my front fenders (mabey they are called wings down under?) I had the logo on disk, it wasn't exactly perfect, but i just told him the size i wanted and he did the rest, turned out great.

If you have a picture, and you tell the sticker guy the size and thickness of the lines for the lettering, i'm sure he could do a perfect match.

I'm with you on DIY and saving the $$, but I've tried contact paper on exterior surfaces...it won't last too long. Vinyl electrical tape will though...you could do lettering of a sort with it. Or other heavier ext vinyl.

Exactly why I'm going to make a stencil and spray it. The edges are curling after about 5 or so months. However, it lasted long enough for me to like the font. I'll take a pix when finished.
No questions on whence "TARDIS?"

Yes!
There is a new series now available, but not to those without cable.
Several people have asked about the name, and when I reply that it is a Toyota Tardis, have asked why the name was so short-lived in the USA by Toyota.

Call any local signmaker and one of them should be able to cut it for you in adheasive vinyl for $10 to $20. Send them the EPS file Mattel linked to and ask that they remove the logo and just cut the text. I would cut one for you and send it if I still had access to my vinyl cutter. They could even probably do it two-tone ala the original scheme without too much trouble.

To apply the cutout, if it isn't fully prepped for you, get some 1" wide (or preferably larger) masking tape and cover the 'TOYOTA' with overlapping layers until you've got the whole word covered. Peel the masking tape with vinyl from the backing and center it over the section above the hatch. Press it firmly down, working to keep any bubbles out. Take something flat, smooth and firm, like a plastic spatula, and run it back and forth over the masking tape a couple of times. Carefully remove the masking tape - the adheasive on the vinyl should keep it attached to the car while the masking tape comes off. It may take a little careful up-down wiggling of the masking take to remove everything. If you notice any bubbles, see if you can work them out from under the vinyl - if you can't get them out, use a sharp xacto knife or simlar to poke a small hole in the bubble and squeeze the air out.

Good luck!
Zach
