EL gear in 2 wheel drive

Post by Soutthpaw »

Just wondering if anyone has removed the lock out to allow the use of the EL gear in 2 wheel drive. I haven't really looked at if it is doable or not. It depends on if the EL gear is moved position when in 4wd. if not then it should be possible to just remove whatever lockout plate is used inside the tranny. This would be useful if lifting the tercel and then adding larger tires

The extra low gear is actually located on the shaft that comes out the rear of the transmission and I believe that it doesn't work in FWD because the transfer shift hub physically blocks the EL shift hub when it's in the FWD position. If you did get it to work, you would have rear wheel drive for that gear, and front for all the rest. Pretty cool.

Thanks for the reply. I have a spare tranny and tx case so I will add it to the list of things to check out for sometime in the future....

if you removed the shaft going to the rear axle, you could do it for sure, but gear oil would leak outta de tranny.
