1984 SR5 AC Compressor leaking from case and shaft seal

Post by 84sr54wd »

Hey guys, I have an 84 Sr5 and the AC has been retro'd to R134A for years. It works great and the air is ice cold. I have tons of AC experience over the years and so this is not new to me. However, I have a reman'd compressor on the car from back in 2015 and the shaft seal and case continually leak oil/refrigerant. I have dye in the system and I can see it slinging from the front between the clutch disk and drive pulley and also under the unit at the case seals. It's the 10P13A compressor. I just ordered the O-rings for the case and all new shaft seals kit for it and went through it and resealed the whole unit.....put it back together and STILL leaking. It's beyond me as to why it continually wants to leak. And you can barely find reman'd compressors anymore, muchless new. The TXV and evap have been replaced, the line pressures are not excessive, etc. Anyone else having this issue with this old denso type carbon seal compressors? I wore gloves, never touched the seal, plenty of oil....installed 100% correctly, torqued the 5 compressor bolts to 23LB/FT in a star pattern...all by the book.

Anyone have an OEM 10P13A laying around that ran R12 and has never been opened up or taken apart? I'm just wondering what to do since I cannot seem to get this unit I have to quit leaking? Any ideas from anyone else that's been in this boat?

I can find a reman 4 seasons but frankly I have low expectations. The last thing I need is some POS "reman'd" unit blowing up and sending metal through my system that is perfect other than the compressor leaking. Thanks!

You might try Timothy Thomas on the Tercel FB page, he’s parting Tercels in Idaho. My parts car was A/C, but I have no idea what shape the compressor may be in. I’m sure the lines were disconnected years ago.

Thanks for the reply. I have already replaced the compressor with another remanufactured unit from Four Seasons which I got from rockauto. Typical remanufactured crap nowadays, it was missing too retaining Clips when I got it specific to the clutch but I fixed all that and have installed it on the car and it seems to be working with no leaks. Time will tell.
