'83 3A hoses question

Post by desertrat »

Hello! Just acquired this '83 Tercel. Trying to figure out what this (molded?) hose is and how I can replace/fix it. Can anyone tell me what it is? Thank you!

The rear of the two hoses that come into the top of the engine.

Welcome to the forum, desertrat. I love the user name, btw. Great imagery.

That rear hose on the valve cover goes to the HIC (hot idle compensation) which does two things. It controls the air-fuel mixture, and also directs vacuum to a flap that controls whether the air intake is sucking warm or cold air.

Thank you so much for the welcome and the response. That might also explain my sporadic dieseling! I'll be looking into replacing it.

Or maybe it's the PCV hose?

Hey desertrat,

It seems dieseling most often occurs when timing is off, you might give it a check. Most of us shoot for 10 BTDC vs the spec’d 5 degrees.

As for your hose challenge, I don’t have a good answer. I’ve kinked normal flex hosing and am currently using some 1/2” copper waterline fitting which work great angle wise, but are nearly impossible to seal to the valve cover.

Thanks for weighing in, Chris. Do you know if the soft angled bit that takes up the most of the first picture pops off or if it's adhered to the rest of the hose? I haven't tried it yet for fear of damaging it further and being out the functional car.

I don’t think you’ll find more hose. It should slip over the nipple on the valve cover and the other end slides over metal pipe leading to the air filter housing. I would expect it will be difficult to save.

Thanks, Chris - I meant adhered to the pipe. Might try to repair the hose I have as it's just a small crack! Really appreciate you chiming in. I'll post if/when I take any action on it.
