My first Tercel wagon 85 4wd

Post by Hines11b3x »

I’ve wanted one for a long time. I finally got one! I grew up in Michigan and my Dad worked for Chrysler in marketing so I pretty much only drive Jeep or Dodge vehicles!

My oldest daughter just got her drivers license so I used that as the excuse to find a Tercel wagon as the kid car.

I got a 85 Tercel 4wd
White
With tan interior

It was probably one of your old cars as I got it in Oregon.
It has a lift and a roof rack and it looks like they spent a lot of time keeping it going

I plan to mostly get it as reliable and solid as I can for my kids and for camping/ wheeling trips. With some squatching when I can get out!

Wow, that looks like a substantial lift. Check to see if the PO lowered the engine, transmission, and crossmember -- some people have had problems with wearing out CV's quickly with lifts, myself included.

David,

How much did you lift your car? I’ve added a couple inches and did replace the drivers side shaft, but I’ve probably put 80k miles on and I still haven’t had any issues on the passenger side.

I don't remember how much the front lift on mine was. Maybe 2" (it was the "Barto lift" from here, way back when), but once I did it I had non-stop problems with CV axles. Others here have had similar problems after lifts, Simon84 is one that stands out to me.

I realize many people who have done lifts haven't had problems but based on my experience and what I've read of others experiences, I always think it's worth mentioning. There was a user here called Professor who advocated for using spacers to drop the engine, trans, and crossmember so as to keep the CV angle in stock range, and I was always a fan of that idea. It makes sense.

Thanks David,

I’m hoping to add a couple more inches in the future and will “lift” the body when I do that. Pretty easy most spots, the nuisance spot to lower is where the front control arms bolt to the subframe. The only time I would tackle this is if I find a “suitable” engine swap and need more space to close the hood.

Chris

PS - plus, w/o chopping or rolling fenders, I think 27” dia. tires are about the max and the gap between the tires and fenders will start to look dopey.

I was told they used XJ front coils and the camber is ridiculous. I’m going to take it down a bit in the front and have a local Japanese car shop go through and fix it. I’m hoping to be able to fit 27x8x14 general grabbers

Picked up some MR2 wheels and dropped them off at the sand blaster shop.
I ordered new tires today as well.

Sandblasting + new tires is great idea. I sandblasted & painted my steel wheels and they were like new againg.

I got the wheels back from sandblasting! $60 for all 4

I’m going to paint them this weekend. The car is for my daughter but I still have to drive it so instead of pink I’m going with purple. And maybe a 80’s/90’s theme!

So it doesn’t like to start consistently. Once it’s going though it sounds good and idles well. IDK if it’s a timing issue, carb/choke or something else. I need to go through and start fixing and replacing stuff.

There is no power to the electric choke:

000F094D-046D-4756-B31E-9B20E5D7FD82.jpeg

Down by the coolant reservoir should be wires to a green plug that used to go to the stock carb. The red wire on that plug should go to the tab for the electric choke on the Weber, which I circled in red here. That will definitely help your starting and cold running. Make sure the choke valve is lubed and moves freely too.

Also, I don't like how the throttle cable is connected to the Weber. There is an easy way to swap the Tercel's stock throttle bellcrank onto the Weber, here is the thread on that:

Thank you. I will hook that wire up! It was getting annoying
I don’t have a factory carb to pull parts from for the throttle mod.

I got the tires mounted today and of course one of the wheels is bent. They couldn’t balance it and I either have to find another one or send it to a shop in Portland to get trued.
So now I’m on the hunt again
