Should I buy parts for a 86` or 85` if i got a 87`?

Post by Zidderser »

hi, as subject suggests, does that matter and/or can/should I mix between those two years?
I am buying transmission parts so they need to be spot on :)
Thanks!

Yup, almost everything from both 85's and 86's should work for your 87. Headlights and grills are the only thing that are different for 87's.

I'm not sure exactly what month the diff ratios change in 1985. Worth doing some research on here.

I think that diff ratio changes with cars that have VIN around 150000-168000. My oldest Tercel had VIN around 168000 and it had already newer diff ratio.

clutch has nothing to do with the diffs. when shopping on rockauto for the 87-88 year tercel, its best to shop under the 1985 year as to not accidentally get parts for the 3rd gen tercels.

In that case it's just separating out the SR5 and DLX the part is fine.

AISIN CKT010 works fine in Euro Tercel. I have installed one kit into mine and that one works well.

And for some reason every Euro Tercel is DLX. SR5 was never introduced in Europe but we still got a lot of SR5 parts like inclinometer and wide side moldings. Tacho cluster was also introduced in many European countries excluding Finland.

that clutch listing does not indicate if it for a 4wd wagon for the '87. Those may not be the same kit, if it is not the 4wd wagon, it is a different clutch assembly than for a 1986 Tercel 4wd wagon or FWD sedan.

in 1987 model year the FWD sedans and hatch back got a total redesign, different engine and trans mounted transversly. They kept the 4wd wagon the same for 87 and 88 model years, that would be in common with the '83-86 sedan, hatchback, and the 4wd wagons.

Be careful when ordering any parts for the '87-88 4wd wagon, almost none of the parts are interchangeable with same year FWD hatch back or sedans, and many parts houses do not know that and their catalogs often just lump the 4wd wagons in with the others.
