My '83 has a stock radio in it, which I've never encountered before and I can't figure out how to get it out. I assume the knobs should pull off and the rest should be obvious from there but I can't get them to budge, and don't want to break them (the radio works so I'd like to keep it).

Re: stock radio removal?
Remove the surrounding panel and it’s very clear/easy to remove.

David-
First of all, that's not a stock Toyota radio as is evidenced by the "Realistic" script on it's faceplate. To remove a factory radio, you need to remove the 4 screws that hold the tan radio surround trim and then remove the radio support brackets. My guess is to remove your radio you have to pull the knobs off, remove the 2 nuts on the tuner and volume shafts, push the radio back toward the firewall, and remove the 4 screws that hold the surround. Or maybe you could get lucky and just remove the 4 screws and slide the whole assembly toward the shifter to disconnect the wiring. Good Luck. (and welcome back!)

Re: stock radio removal?
Rich was right! I couldn't remove the radio surround trim until the radio's face plate was out. The knobs needed to be pulled off (in two pieces, the cap-like outer piece first and then the ring-like inner piece), then the nuts on the tuner and volume shafts, then the face plate slid off (then I could remove the radio surround trim), then there were four screws securing the radio itself in there. The volume and tuner knobs were just really corroded on to the shafts. Much prying was needed.
Ah, I figured the radio was stock because it's so old but maybe it was just replaced early in the car's life. Were the stock one's Toyota-branded?
