replacing 12v outlet

Post by Neu »

Hey y'all,

So, while camping someone decided to plug a 12v electric kettle into the 12v outlet/cig lighter in the tercel. Predictably it got pretty hot and popped something because the outlet doesn't work anymore.

Is there an easy way to replace the outlet? Is there a fuse in there I'll need to replace? I'd prefer not to pull the dash off, lol.

Should be a 15amp fuse in the driver's side kickpanel fuse box. Does the lighter or surrounding panel appear melted?
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!

Nothing appears melted but the outlet was very warm to the touch when the kettle stopped working.

I'll check that 15amp fuse in a bit.

If the fuse is fine, remove the bezel and check the wiring behind the bezel. It is soldered together and I have had multiple T4s with broken wires behind them.

that is on a fuse, not sure where because it could be under the hood, or on the side kick panel. I had to replace it once but I do not recall where it was located. same thing happened, plugged in too high a load into the cig lighter outlet.

Oh woops I forgot to update this thread. Sorry.

It desoldered from the back of the 12v outlet itself. I just had to resolder it. The fuse was intact.

I don't expect to be plugging anything with a big load into that 12v again. I bought an inverter that goes onto the battery if I ever really need anything in the future.
