Re: Tommy’s Turdcel
Got the front end torn down and good thing I did. Found a RF spindle cracked, lower control arm worn out.
Axles are out.
Can’t get the engine/ transmission combo out the top without dropping the cross member?
I’m kinda tired….

Re: Tommy’s Turdcel
you should be able to lift out the engine/trans combo without loosening the cross member. you have to jocky it around, moving them forward and up at the same time. I have done it several times.
but I think it is much easier to just unbolt the trans from the engine, there are 4 big 17mm bolts (two at the top of the bell housing, and one on each side), the side bracing plates that use four 14mm bolts, and the starter motor. and do not forget to remove the little 10mm bolt that holds the heater hose to the bell housing. it should separate and you can lift the engine out by itself without the extra length, bulk and weight of the transaxle. I find the extra effort to unbolt the trans worth it since the engine by itself is much easier to muscle around as you lift it.

Re: Tommy’s Turdcel
And she’s out!
Thanks for the encouragement Petros !
This is the absolute filthiest car I’ve ever had apart.
Lots of miles 274,000 on this car , 125,000 ish on the donor pack! I’ve ruined 2 power washers and it’s still not clean!
Gonna split the core engine and transmission.
Gotta love up my next engine and transmission, clean parts.
Thanks to everyone helping us with this car and the wealth of knowledge here!
Cheers it’s time for a beer!

Re: Tommy’s Turdcel
We are clean!
Ok gonna go ahead and pop the transmission off, do a rear main seal, oil Pan gasket, timing belt, vc, inspect the clutch, etc….
Got the old one separated and the known running engine on a stand.
I was covered in grease and oil, had to wash the shop down!

Re: Tommy’s Turdcel
Nice work! it is out now. But I usually remove the head pipe and wiggle it off the exhaust manifold, gives you a bit more wiggle room for the engine to come out.
I have also found on really oily/dirty engine bays, I soap up and pressure wash the engine, the engine bay, and all of the mounting bolts real good before I pull it. you do not get all of the greasy grim of course (you expose more after the engine is out), but it makes it a bit less messy to pull all the fasteners and yank out the engine.
Good luck!

Engine is getting a new timing belt, and reseal.
That exhaust pipe was rusted on but I got it off.
Trans is a 4.11 for sure 41 teeth

Engine reseal time.
Clean everything again, get ready to pop the rear axles and get that diff!
Inspection, swap , reseal.
Story of my life “ awaiting parts”!

Re: Tommy’s Turdcel
Rear diff pulled off and it’s a 3:73.
The rear brakes are bad too so I’ll swap the whole assembly out tomorrow.
4:11 here we come!
Engine reseal job continues to give….
Who needs to work out? I just go to the shop.

Re: Tommy’s Turdcel
Well thanks guys!
My 4:11 rear end is installed now! I also removed the fuel tank from both cars both drained of crappy gas but weigh kinda heavy!
I have not opened them but I think they are both full of slime..... I looked around and cant find a replacement tank?
Help?
I know I might be able to have a tank boiled out but really wanted a fresh new tank.

Re: Tommy’s Turdcel
pull off the fuel level sensor and take a look inside with a flash light, you may find the inside of the tank is not so bad, often you just need to flush it out with carb cleaner. you can also check and clean the fuel tank sensor while you are at it, there is a thread on cleaning the contacts to make it work better.
nice work, and good luck.
