Hello.
I just tried to start my 86 sr5 after a lot of rebuilding. I installed a 32/36 Weber and as I was cranking over the engine, gas spewed out from the carb. It was like a large mist of gas and air coming out. The car never did start and the gas only came out right when I tried to start it.
Any thoughts on what the issue could be ?
Thank you!

I’ve never had a Weber, but have seen plenty. The only time I’ve seen airflow “out” of the carb would be a backfire situation, usually if timing is off. Did you work on the ignition/timing as well?

Yes, check you have the cam timing correct relative to the crank, and that the distributor rotor is point at the correct spark plug that is on TDC as the crank rotates. it is easy to get the distributor clocked incorrectly after it has been out of the car. it must be set properly, not just dropped back into place.
gasoline should not be spurting out of the carb if it is set up correctly.

I am pretty sure I lined up everything on TDC when I put everything back together. I will have to double check that and see.

Easy way to make sure the cam and crank are correctly set is to remove the #1 spark plug, plug the whole with your thumb, and use a ratchet on the crank bolt to manually crank the engine. If set correctly, as the timing marks approach TDC you should feel pressure build up under your thumb.
Someone please correct me if I got something wrong in there, it's been a long time since I've used that technique.

Hey Jessie,
The position of the valves must be considered (or some other method used to confirm TDC No 1 on the compression stroke. You may have lined everything up perfectly and be 180 degrees off.

I have used webers on a few cars. They’re a bit tricky to get tuned if you’re not used to these style carbs. I agree with others on timing. I had my cam off 180 and it did similar things. Would crank and crank but wouldn’t run. It backfired and gas came out of the top of the carb like yours. It’s possible it’s just the distributor gear is off if you didn’t touch the belt.
