'84 4WD in Boulder, CO - $1,500

Post by Rickety Rhino »

1984 manual 6 speed 4WD, 232K miles, $1,500
Runs smoothly, good transmission. Gets 25 MPG around town, 32+ MPG highway.
Has a working sun roof and inclinometer, good front sway bar, good tires. No A/C.
Recent new parts from trying to pass emissions: EGR valve, O2 sensor, spark plugs, air filter,
distributor rotor, oil & filter.
Issues:
- Doesn't pass emissions (CO is too high at 36 GPM, limit is 30 GPM)
Probably vacuum switch B in the O2 sensor circuit is bad.
- If I don't use ethanol free gas, it's prone to vapor lock when temps are > 90 deg.
- Rear body panels have some rust, but doors and hatchback are rust-free.
- Distributor vacuum advance diaphram has been broken for years, hose is plugged,
didn't affect emissions tests.

Comes with lots of new spare parts: CV joint/axle, heater core, belts & hoses,
1 headlight, etc. Also the original Toyota Service Manual and Owner's Manual.
Have all maintainance receipts.

there was a thread on this forum about passing emissions test in California, I think by Tercel4wdrules. If you do a search you might find the topic and the various solutions that the owner tried. Usually it is not difficult to fix, it is finding the problem that takes the time.

I think, if I recall, too high a CO might be caused by a vac leak in the fuel system. if the only reason you are selling it is the high CO levels, you may be able to fix it fairly easy so it will pass. than you can keep it.

Hi Petros - I'm also selling it because of the vapor lock problem (probably also fixable), and because it doesn't have A/C - it's getting too miserable to drive during the hot months. I'm posting it first on this forum, with many thanks for all the advice everyone has given me over the years.

Hey Rickety,
About the vapor locking situation...
You mentioned the absence of AC.
If it was a factory delete, then there is a non-metallic dam behind the grill where the AC condenser would go.
I wonder if removing that dam would lower the under-hood temp enough to suppress the vapor lock?
Might only work above 35MPH!

I wrapped the fuel line between the fuel pump and the carb, where it passes over the intake/exhasut manifold, with extra insulation and foil to try and keep that length of fuel line from getting too hot. seems to work, but when in hot weather and I need to stop for gas, the first thing I do is pop open the hood and prop it up. this allows the heat to dissipate out from under the hood. I will use the rest room, fill up the tank, and pay for it. And usually by than the under hood temp is much lower, so I close the hood and can start the car easy enough. if I forget to open the hood, no way it will restart unless I let it cool down 30-40 min.
