Water pump bypass leaking

Post by Vivian17 » Mon Mar 26, 2018 8:21 pm

I think I need a new bypass pipe, fluid leaks out as fast as its poured in. The place i took it too said the part is discontinued and I'm not sure where to go from here. I love my 1983 tercel, eager to find a solution.

Yeah, the early 3AC's had thin-walled tubes (tended to rust thru) and were replaced with thicker-walled ones in the later cars. I may have a couple around here- where are you located? BTY- welcome aboard!
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!

I may have found a source at https://partsouq.com/en/search/all?q=1626815011 You can also put in your VIN and look through the Toyota catalog, pictures and all. I ordered this myself on Saturday. It was shipped earlier today from Dubai fedex and will be here Thursday.

EDIT: It was only 10.93 to ship, and they shipped it priority “overnight”.

welecome to the forum!

Usually itjust needs a new O-rings (rubber seals), but it is a smiple part to fabricate if indeed the metal is actually corroded away.

either way it is an easy fix, you just need the right part.

I am sure there are lots of spares around this forum, I may have one for you in a box of parts somewhere in my shop, if you can not find one let me know.

All three parts (gasket, O-rings, bypass tube) are still available from Toyota, I just picked up the set a month or so back.

when you get your replacements, I would advise putting some non-hardening gasket sealer on the o-rings before you install the by-pass tube. I have had the new o-rings get torn when I installed them, putting the sealer on it lubricates and protects the o-rings as you slide them into the fittings.

I have started to lube O-rings and other small rubber seals with Dow Corning Molykote 111, per the recommendation of a trusted friend who owns a reputable repair shop in Portland. This prevents tearing upon installation, as Petros mentioned, as well as protects the rubber seal from oxidation.
