Rear transmission leak - Can't find part number

Post by Tman312 »

Hey guys

My mom's 84 Tercel has a bad trans leak out of the driveshaft yoke seal.

I've gotten the seal that's for the output shaft and it is too small in outer diameter

Wondering if anyone else has replaced this seal and can shed some light

Thanks
Troy

I do not know what a "drive shaft yoke seal" is, do you mean the rear out put shaft? the one that the rear drive shaft plugs into?

those should be available, it is a standard seal, you have to order the correct part however. there is a thread o this forum with the seal part numbers listed. there are five seals: input shaft (rarely fails, you have to pull the trans to replace it), the two front cv axle seals on either side of the front diff, the selector lever shaft seal, and the rear output drive shaft seal on the end of the tail housing. When you order make sure you are ordering for the 4wd trans, all model years use the same seals.

What is this rear output shaft seal listed as on rockauto? I can't find it -- "drive axle seal" is for the front CV axles, and no idea what the extension seal is for. "Main/output shaft seal" sounds right but neither of the part #s match anything I see in these kinds of threads, and the measurements for the two seals they currently list are totally different.

Wait, under extension housing seal for the automatic trans section there is "NATIONAL 710306" which is 32 mm x 52 mm x 11 mm -- those match the measurements in c_j's post here:

viewtopic.php?p=69416#p69416

Does that sound right to you folks?

Never mind, I just found xirdneh's post with the measurements and some other part #'s for it. Looks like this is the correct seal.
