Saved Another One From The Crasher
Bought this 1987 T4 SR5 on ebay for $190 Aussie. PO had it for 25 years and was driving it until 3 weeks ago when it developed a bad noise from the engine. So he decided to sell the whole car for parts and said it had very bad issues. He said the gearbox was good and that's what I primarily wanted it for. It's done just over 500,000 kms. I took it home on a car trailer. Gave it a good clean in the engine bay and outside. As soon as I started it I had an idea what was wrong with it. Removing the aternator belt confirmed a lot of play in the water pump and noise disappeared after I started the engine without the belt. It also has a small crack in the windscreen and a faint noise from the gearbox which disappears when the clutch pedal is depressed. I guess on of the bearings is starting to wear out. I haven't been able to drive it on the road yet as it has been de-registered. I'll sneak out one night after I've fixed the water pump.

Wow, good for you- what a score! Sure wish I could find something like that here in the US mid-atlantic rust belt. Be sure to check the tranny oil level (noise sounds like an input shaft or cluster shaft bearing to me.)
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!

Re: Saved Another One From The Crasher
As you can see it is rust free, even underneath. I feel like I've stolen it at that price. I did a compression test on all the cylinders at the weekend with the engine cold. I don't want to do it hot until I've fixed the pump. They range from 165psi to 185psi.

Re: Saved Another One From The Crasher
I guess if I had not bought it, it would have gone to the wrecker as I was the only bidder. Most likely the wrecker would've crashed it as there's not a big demand for Tercel parts in Australia.

Re: Saved Another One From The Crasher
great save. do a trans flush with ATF/gear oil mix, and put in regular gear lube to the proper level the trans noise will reduce or go away.
I have often run across very decent looking rust free tercel4wd in wrecking yards that just needed a clutch or a head gasket, likely some mechnic told them it would cost more than it was worth so they sold it to the wrecking yard. it is such a shame, a good running clean one will sell for $3000-3500 around here, well worth fixing. I blame the idiot mechanic that either did not know what he was talking about, or just did not want to work on a car older than they are.

Re: Saved Another One From The Crasher
Thanks guys. I will replace the water pump this weekend and follow your suggestion Petros regarding the gear oil change.
As an aside has anybody thought of or converted a Tercel to all electric? Just something that crossed my mind as a project. Probably will be too expensive I guess.

Hi Jony, thats a great score! wow how is the paint on it? is it in good condition too? looks like one I saw on the side of the road in Ormond a year ago. you should enter it in the classic toyota event on soon in Melbourne! That bearing could be the throw out bearing in the clutch. worth doing both at the same time if you get around to it!

I know a little about electric vehicle's and the tercel has to much weight to it. Your better off with the 2wd versionJonymoto wrote: As an aside has anybody thought of or converted a Tercel to all electric? Just something that crossed my mind as a project. Probably will be too expensive I guess.
Even a 2wd isn't a great choice when it comes to weight.

Re: Saved Another One From The Crasher
I actually considered converting a T4 to electric drive. I don't yet have the shop needed to take on such a project but Totalled out Nissan Leafs can be had very cheaply. You could gut the drive components out of it and build battery pack for it. In the end you could end up with a quick little classic car.
