What a great site, so glad I found you guys. I have a 83 4WD wagon, and just recently began hearing a whirling noise, started hearing it only in 4th gear, now a little bit in 5th also. It disappears when I enguage the clutch. I replaced the clutch and throwout bearing, less than a year ago. But it wasen't Toyota parts. ( Autozone ) I think my CV joints are bad, but wouldn't it make the whirling noise in all gears. Thank's , Deturn

I just joined a few days ago, it's great to have finally found this place. I knew there just had to be people out there who were as obsessed with these cars like I am! How about posting some pics of your ride in the Gallery section of the forum?

Welcome to the forums!

Do you hear the noise with your clutch pedal out in neutral (you may have to rev the car?)? I've got a similar noise.

How is the fluid level in your transmission? Have you tried a good quality synthetic fluid? I put Castrol synthetic in my trans and it made a huge difference.

I think if your release bearing was toast, you would only hear the noise when your clutch pedal is pressed in, not when driving.

Good luck.

Thank's for the replies. My trans level is good, and I have 1qt of synthetic in it. I think I'll change my trans oil anyway. I have also been thinkng that maybe my CV joint is making the noise at a certain speed, 4th and 5th gear.I think I'm going to change them also. Just wondering if I should drop the trans at the same time. It was quite a job last time. But whatever it is I will find it, as I like this car alot. It was stored in a garage for 7 years, a guy was going to give it to his son when he turned 16. But his son didn't want it, LUCKY for me. Thank's again

With the engine running and the car sitting still...noise with clutch in...throwout bearing...noise with clutch out....input shaft bearing.

ANY doubts about the trans oil...change it to good oil and check the diff & trans plugs for metal particles.

One thing you DON'T do with 4wd...put it in EL on solid ground and pop the clutch.

I've got a slight whine in fourth gear too, I'm due for a trans. fluid replacement though, hopefully that'll help. It was pouring rain today on the way home from work, so I put the car in EL, and took off from a red light. It's pretty neat how the car pulls. I didn't even rev it any more than the weight of my foot on the pedal, just took off like I normally would, it's just that in EL it was sorta quick. And it's neat that you can take off in the snow as easily as that too, it's like carrying a small patch of dry pavement where ever you go in winter..

Hi and thank's for replying. It dosen't make any noise at all with the engine running, car sitting still, with the clutch in or out. It seems to do it mainly in fourth and fifth gear, above 30-35 mph. It almost sounds like something rubbing. Like playing cards in the spokes of a bicycle.I drove about 40 miles today and heard it a little in 3rd gear to. But only above 30- 35 mph. I think it's getting worse. Just started all of a sudden. Been driving like grandpa, so it's not like I was 4 wheeling or anything, only had it on the beach once, over a year ago. I guess something just finally wore out. I was hopeing, CV joints, center bearing, or something lose hitting the drive axles. But I can't find anything. Anyone have any ideas? Trans rebuild, noooooooooooo, lol. If I do have to go into the trans, do'es anyone know if that info is in the techincal manual. Thank's, going to go have a brew, maybe more. Deturn

Ps. Hey dcn, don't wait to long on that trans fluid replacement. I'm sure that's not what caused my troub, as I always kept it clean and full, but it won't hurt at all.

Just went outside, jacked the front of the car up, started it, put it in gear, and the noise is definently coming from the transaxle, sounds like it's below or near the axles. I guess the fun has begun.Anyone ever had this prob, or ever rebuilt one. Now I'm going to have that brew. Thank's , Deturn

I, myself, and I....wouldn't do anything to the trans except drain the oil and put some good oil in it. Synth blend?

Open all 3 drain plugs and see how much oil is in it.

Check the magnets on the 2 front plugs for metal.

Noise might be inside one of the axles?

Thank's I'll try that this evening. When it's jacked up and running in gear, it sounds like some loose stuff in the trans axle. But maybe it is be an axle. They have been making noise on turns for about a year now. Do you know, what transmissions will fit this car, well without a lot of modifications. Maybe other Toyotas or year Tercels. What about a automatic? Don't know a lot about this car, well yet.lol
