Rear diff required - Melbourne Australia
Hi Guys, I'm looking for a rear diff with 4.1 ratio. I replaced the manual transmission a few years ago, but my Tercel is 83 with the lower ratio. I had to disconnect the link between the 4WD lever and gearbox.

I have one but the freight might be really high to get it to you

do you still have the original complete trans? if so, you can separate the trans from the front diff, and swap in your original diff.

Re: Rear diff required - Melbourne Australia
Hi dlb, unfortunately no. I don't have the original gearbox.
Gottolovem, is it just the diff or the whole axle assembly? How much would like for it?
I'm not in a hurry for it. Maybe sending it by boat (at my expense of course) instead of airfreight might be cheaper. I just want to re-store the car to its original specification. I've had it since it was new and still going strong.

I'll let it go for a hundred dollar's (that's what it cost me at j-yard)
I'm not quite sure how to go about shipping it on a boat but its probably not hard to figure out.

Re: Rear diff required - Melbourne Australia
HI Jonymoto, I'm also in Melbourne. Tercels ysed to be everywhere here! Now I never see them.
Do you know anyone in ipswich queensland? because there is a crap load of parts for sale for $100 here. Maybe the owner will seperate if you give him enough dosh? http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/ipswich/ ... 1105619425
When I had my Tercel I would always get parts at Grants wreckers in Geelong. they don't seem to have any Tercel right now. Have you checked all the websites of the wrecking yards? If you are not in a big rush something will come up soon enough. Also check the rear end of the corolla 4wd wagons (more of these around) as they have a similar dif. I'm not sure about the ratio though

Re: Rear diff required - Melbourne Australia
i'm not positive but i believe i read somewhere that ae95's had 4.11 diff gearing so that's a good idea for jonymoto to look into, matt.

Re: Rear diff required - Melbourne Australia
Thanks Guys.
Matt, I almost cried when I saw that ad on Gumtree in Ipswich. If only he had been in Victoria or even NSW, I would've taken the lot. But I don't fancy driving 2 days there with a trailer and 2 days back. I have checked a few wreckers, but no luck so far. I have bought stuff from Grants as well, an electronic dizzy from an AE80/82 which is running nicely thanks to previous advice from dlb on how to connect the vacuum hoses. The parts in Ipswich are from a 1983 Tercel, so the diff ratio will be the same as what I've got. I'm tempted to buy the front diff and follow dlb's recommendation, but I found that my Terc was able to climb hills in higher gears with the 4.1 ratio, so I would prefer to change the rear diff. Also, I imagine a rear diff will be less worn that a front one.
Gottolovem, thanks for your offer. I will spend another month searching the wreckers here. If I'm still not successful, I will buy it off you. Can you send me the weight and dimension of the diff so that I can check here how much it would cost for freight, please?
Dlb, as always you have been very helpful. I will look into the ae95 diff.

Re: Rear diff required - Melbourne Australia
It measures 9 inches by 9 inches by 12 inches and weighs 25 pounds. Probably a little more on the weight and the size once I build a little crate for it.

Re: Rear diff required - Melbourne Australia
Hey Jony, you could try putting a message out on the AE95 wagon page on facebook if anyone knows the diff ratio also what side does the panhard rod go on the tercel? You will need to check all the contact points. I have shocks on my corolla that were originally for the Tercel. the rear end is also in common with the drifters favourite - the ae85 . I will ask around to see if anyone knows the difference. I don't think it will be very economic to get one from the states though that is really nice of gottolovem. One will come along for sure. I just waited a couple of years to find a replacement sunroof for my 4wd wagon. keep looking and something will turn up! if you have the room you might want to look at getting a spare Tercel for parts. you can save so much money doing this! Also perhaps advertise on Gumtree. there are loads of tercels in Tasmania especially. good luck!
