Speedo driven gear needed

Post by rer233 »

Well, the speedo quit working on my '87 FWD a/t wagon the other day- traced the problem to a toothless plastic driven gear on the tranny side of the speedo cable. It's (or was) a 20 tooth gear (written right on the gear.) It's about 3 inches long. I searched thru my stuff, and all I came up with was a 21 tooth gear from an '87 4WD a/t (too long) and a 22 tooth from a 4WD m/t (not sure of the year.) I installed the 22 and now the speedo reads about 20% low (I'm also running 195/70 14 tires and an SR5 cluster which just contributes to the problem.)

Called the dealer friday- NLA (imagine that!) Anybody out there that have an 18, 19, or 20 tooth gear they'd like to sell or trade for....

Thanx, Rich.
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!

Update- Checked the gear in my '83 SR5 and it's the proper length 20 tooth one. So if anybody here has a trashed 3.73 transaxle they'd like to sell the gear out of....
Thanks, Rich.

Hmm. I do have a 3.73 trans that is a spare that I am selling the whole trans... I could just take that speedo gear out, and when I sell it, tell them they'll need to reuse it.

but first... I need to dig it out of the parts car

PM sent. WOW- 2 replies within 3 min of my post. You guys are the best!
I agree, it would be foolish to raid an other-wise complete tranny for the gear I'm after. I was hoping someone would have a trashed unit that would have the needed part.
Thanx again, Rich.
