My first Terc! 86 SR5

Post by PNWtercelSR5 »

Got this thing this summer and definitely had more issues with it than had originally hoped for but I love driving it and hope to keep it alive for a long time.

Odometer show 227k but the car was definitely well kept..
It shows a faint emblem left over from its time as a company vehicle with "Chelan-Douglas Health District" which I thought was pretty cool.

It runs pretty well, engine was rebuilt 50k ago and looks real clean. When it gets warm it PURRRS nicely. Had some carb issues and had that rebuilt and also radiator fan was out and had that replaced. Currently having some steering difficulties.. Looks like power steering boot is torn and the arm may be getting dry because it sticks a little bit and it is easier to turn right i think than left.. Also need to do the brakes and struts. and then eventually get some body work done! It was apparently parked in the snow when a plow came through and did some damage to the drivers side.. May need to get a new driver side door if I cant get it fully straight.

Plan on driving this puppy till it has no life left in it!!

sometimes steering stiffness comes from the steering shaft u-joint. lubricate and check for play, these are difficult to find replacements if it is bad. for now just keep it lubed well with light oil.

bad boots do not cause steering stiffness, they are there to protect the steering rack, there are inner seals on the rack itself. if the stiffness is not frum the u-joint you might be needed a new rack. If it has power steering, make sure the fluid is topped up (use ATF), it leaks out, the rack needs to be rebuilt (or replaced) and that is likely the problem.

Good luck.
