I believe this is the same one. It's pretty nuts. Some good pics there.
Some facts on the 14 cylinder version:
Total engine weight: 2300 tons (The crankshaft alone weighs 300 tons.)
Length: 89 feet
Height: 44 feet
Maximum power: 108,920 hp at 102 rpm
Maximum torque: 5,608,312 lb/ft at 102rpm

That's nice.
On the locomotive engines (did you know the engine doesn't actually drive the train, it just drives the generator to power the motors), the cylinders were soo big, you took a ladder to climb in them and used to sandpaper to cross-hatch the walls when they were being bored out.
Crazy big stuff....

Are ya sure? I know locomotives have big engines (called the prime mover) to power the generator which powers the traction motors that turn the wheels, but I didn't think they were that big. You've probably seen it done or something, likely, so I should probably have left well enough alone with this thread, but I just thought I'd ask.
Here's a link to some info on the engines that operate a loco, it's kinda greek to me as far as what size it'd be, but maybe someone here gets it:

I'm a train freak and thought I knew about these things, but admittedly I've never seen an engine in person so I can't say how big the cylinders are I just didn't think a ladder and dude would fit inside..
Sorta reverse-reminds me of the time I saw the cylinders in the Tercel. I don't think you could even fit a pop can in there they were so small ..

I haven't checked out your link, but from what I recall, I think most modern train engines are diesel turbine electric these days. Turbines OWN!!dcn wrote: Are ya sure?
