dlb - I know I made a reference in the danzo/Weber thread to what I did with the Redline filter. It's still working with, honestly, no ill effect that I can notice.
I do like pearson's resolution of the filter, particularly because I really like the idea of warmed air being available to the snorkel/cleaner during Winter (it just seems right...). Maybe this Summer I can figger it out with a vac source to open a flap, a la the OE setup.

i know tom, and i was honestly all set to do your and gmeddy's mod but then my dad started pointing out how close the lid was getting to the throat and it just got me thinking about alternatives. it also looks like i will need even more clearance than you needed, and that's what worries me. i guess i could just try cutting the filter and order a new one if i find it's too short...i'll figure it out and keep you posted. thanks though.

dlb - note that I also had to cut the X-braces in the hood (I did this on first installing the Weber). I've not noticed any probs with this excising.

Alough you made the weber filter set-up work, I am not keen on either solution. Personally I think I would fabricate my own adapter that would be about half the height of the one in the kit. Should not be difficult to get adapter down to about 1/2" thick.

Or even better yet, get an intake manifold from a wrecking yard (if I did not have one in a box of parts somewhere in my garage), remove the mount studs, either plug the holes epoxy or weld them closed, and install new studs to match the Weber base. I would also enlarge the opening for the intake on the manifold to match the throttle/throat size in the weber.

I also like the idea some plumbing to allow for a remote filter, preferably up high on the firewall to allow to cross flooding roadways without water induction.

I would certainly agree with fabbing a different adapter, particularly with the "quality" of the Redline adapter, as detailed in my installation story; it was a real POS.
You are more talented than moi, however...

I do not think it takes that much talent to make a simple adapter plate, I am sure you could do it. I think it just takes not being too fearful to try it on your own. There is always an assumption by most people that the company that makes these parts must be smarter than you and know what they are doing. In my experience, this is just not true. Even big companies like Toyota can make really stupid blunders.

After owning a Dodge Caravan I will run out of fingers AND toes list off the number of defective parts I redesigned, built and installed over the time we owned it just to keep from having to fix it again. Of course they went bankrupt and are owned by Fiat now, which is likely a big improvement.

petros, i like that idea. i don't have a spare manifold but i can get one around here. the hole in the intake that the carb sits over is maybe 3/4" longer than the weber base so that will need to be filled too but it should work. the resulting problems though are that you would also need to alter or make your own heat shield and phenolic spacer to fit the new stud pattern/intake opening. hmmm.

tom, i did notice that but i marked the top of the weber with white out (you know, correction stuff for writing...it was here at work while i was messing around with this) and closed the hood to see where it sat on the hood and the x-braces aren't an issue in mine. no contact there. weird.

this is hilarious. i might apply for a government grant for you to build the ultimate tercel because i know that it would just be bulletproof.

Not so hilarious when you attempt to drive though water over the roadway, that "looks only about a foot deep", and it sucks water in the intake and causes the engine to stumble and stutter in the middle of the crossing!!! That darn cold air intake will suck water right up just from splash or the "bow wave" you form at the front of the car as you drive through. I had to back out and I removed the cold air intake duct, it gave me another 4" of freeboard over the flood waters, and made it though (much to the objections of my daughter!). So if the actual air intake was higher in the engine compartment (or better yet, up on the roof with a remote intake "kit"), than the only limit to water crossings would be when the car starts to float and you lose contact with the road surface. Once or twice a year I have to drive through a river to get home or get to work, not usually a problem, but with a higher air inlet, it would be much improved. Now add a means to raise up the suspension from the drivers seat, and there is not much around here I could not get through. Oh, and BTW, we got 4 more inches of heavy snow last night.

Start looking in the junk yards for a Citroën DS to rob the suspension...

Facetious, I know, but I could not resist...
